I thought I could narrow it down to a top 20 but this just shows how impossible it is. ;D

When critic Kim Newman told me some of his favourite SW’s, he also followed up with:

"Though I’m more drawn to American Westerns of the Ford-Hawks-Boetticher-Mann-Daves-Peckinpah school. A list of underappreciated US Westerns:

At Gunpoint, A Big Hand for Little Lady, Curse of the Undead, Fury at Showdown, Man Behind the Gun, Posse From Hell, Ride in the Whirlwind, Tension at TableRock, Terror in a Texas Town, Ulzana’s Raid, A Man Alone, Silver City, The Hired Hand."

There’s a growing (albeit slowly) range of western reviews at FC btw…

There’s definitely a few odd choices on my last list and some surprising omissions. If I had to pick a top 10 non-spaghettis at the moment, my list would be:

Ulzana’s Raid
The Wild Bunch
The Outlaw Josey Wales
Duel at Diablo
El Condor
Lawman
Chato’s Land
The Missouri Breaks
The Culpepper Cattle Company
Mr Horn (a TV film, so not sure if it counts, I’ll swap it for Doc if not)

Favorite Non-Spaghetti Westerns huh? I’m a little particular with the Westerns of my native land, but I do have a few I really enjoy.

Ride the High Country (1962) - Sam Peckinpah

Johnny Guitar (1954) - Nicholas Ray

Unforgiven (1992) - Clint Eastwood

Tombstone (1993) - George P. Cosmatos & Kevin Jarre

Bandidas (2006) -

Rio Bravo (1959) - Howard Hawks

Big Jake (1971) - George Sherman

No Name on the Bullet (1959) - Jack Arnold

The Naked Spur (1953) - Anthony Mann

Ride Lonesome (1957) - Budd Boetticher

Rough Night in Jericho (1967) - Arnold Laven

Bad Girls (1994) - Jonathan Kaplan

Dean, I know that your post is from 2017, (forgive the 7-year delay), but I was just wondering if you actually got to meet Kim Newman?

This is one gentleman that I always listen to when he presents an extra, and his thoughts on a particular film…

I find him very laid back, and easy to listen to.

.

No I just asked him on Twitter what some of his favourite Italian westerns were, and he kindly responded in great detail. I really didn’t expect it.

„El Dorado“ and „The Sons of Katie Elder“, because those were the first Western Movies I watched as a kid with my dad. And the Duke is my hero since that days… many many moons ago.

Others I really like: Open Range, Unforgiven, Dances with Wolves, Silverado, Tombstone, High Noon, Magnificent Seven (Original!), Hateful 8, and I enjoy most of the James Stewart, Audie Murphy and Randolph Scott Western Movies
