Watching Margheriti’s Operazione Goldman, too bad the stream on Amazon is rather bad, but enough for a saturday morning watch
There were spy movies made in the 1960s in many european countries (and of course many films were co-productions as well.)
Italy had Agent 077, France OSS 117, West-Germany Jerry Cotton (played by american actor George Nader). To name but a few.
There were also spy movies from the UK other than the Bond movies. And there were spy movies made in America, Hong Kong and Japan, and a few other places. There were even spy movies made in the former Eastern Bloc countries in the 60s.
So the term “eurospy” doesn’t cover all of the 60s spy films that were produced because of the James Bond craze.
Here is the theme to Mission Bloody Mary (1965), one of the Agent 077 films, composed by Ennio Morricone and with vocal by familiar SW singer Maurizio Graf.
Oddly enough there were 2 parallel Agent 077 film series, the 3 films with Ken Clark as Dick Malloy agent 077, and the 2 Richard Harrison films, where 077 instead had the name Bob Fleming.
The Ken Clark films with english titles:
Mission Bloody Mary (1965)
From The Orient With Fury (1965)
Special Mission Lady Chaplin (1966)
The Richard Harrison films with english titles:
Secret Agent Fireball (1965)
Killers Are Challenged (1966)
I first wrote that the german spy film series was Jeff Cotton, small mistake by me, it’s Jerry Cotton not Jeff Cotton.
Anyway, FBI agent Jerry Cotton played by George Nader, sort of a hybrid eurospy/eurocrime. 8 films were made between 1965 and 1969.
I’d love for some more of these Eurospy flicks to get Blu-ray releases. They seem ripe for a Vinegar Syndrome boxset or something like that.
Yeah those are criminally under represented on HD format and there are some high profile directors that made some, e.g. Sollima, his are basically lost and absent
Sollima directed 3 eurospy movies, all of them made right before his 3 SWs, (his SWs were also made in a row one after the other, no other films in between).
Requiem for a Secret Agent (1966)
Agent 3S3 Massacre in the Sun (1966)
Agent 3S3 Passport to Hell (1965)
The 2 Agent 3S3 movies with George Ardisson, and the 3rd with Stewart Granger.
Requiem for a Secret Agent (1966) also had Daniela Bianchi in the cast, she was in a lot of eurospy movies, 8 films, after the Bond movie From Russia with Love (1963).
Daniela was never in a SW though. But several actors, both male and female, in eurospy were also in SWs.
I want a BluRay box set of these asap
Agent 3S3 Passport to Hell (1965) and Requiem for a Secret Agent (1966) have been available on streaming i italy in hd quality, so they could release them right away on blu disc.
but CG are goons, they need some asskicking…
Here are the spy movies, english titles, Daniela Bianchi starred in, including her Bond movie.
The Last Chance (1968)
Operation Kid Brother (1967)
Your Turn to Die (1967)
Requiem for a Secret Agent (1966)
Special Mission Lady Chaplin (1966)
The Balearic Caper (1966)
Slalom (1965)
Code Name Tiger (1964)
From Russia With Love (1963)
I rewatched The Venetian Affair (1967) in memory of Elke Sommer’s recent passing. This is more a low-key spy drama than a Bond thriller (or spoof). Robert Vaughn (1932-2016) plays a former CIA man, now journalist, who is sent to Venice to investigate the assassination of a US diplomat.
Vaughn was well-known to audiences for starring in the spy spoof TV series The Man from U.N.C.L.E., one of many spy TV series that were produced in the 60s because of the success of the Bond movies, (not all of the spy TV series were spoofs, some were more serious). He had been in many other TV series as well.
As mentioned before The Venetian Affair (1967) is neither a Bond like thriller or a spoof. It’s worth seeing, but not a great film. It has a solid cast, the Venice setting is atmospheric, but the script is so-so and a bit vague. It was solely a US production despite the italian locations and european actors. (Fun to see Luciana Paluzzi in a small part, she was born in 1937 and is still alive).
