Duel in the Eclipse / Réquiem para el gringo (José Luis Merino, 1968)

good or bad version the movie was bad and that is a fact

It can’t be a fact
I did notice, though, that their version is likely a matted fullscreen version.
I have always suspected that this film was not shot in widescreen (just like RED SUN)…and CultCine’s version seems to confirm my suspicions.
My old fullscreen version has more to the image at the top and the bottom of the screen than this “widescreen” edition.
Just check the database, which gives the aspect ratio with 1,66:1. Which should be correct.

I have to confess that I am terrible when it comes to understanding aspect ratio numbers.
Frankly, I have a mental block against anything related to numbers (that is why I am the world’s worst in mathematics!).
So, I don’t know if you are saying that I am correct in thinking that DUEL IN THE ECLIPSE wasn’t shot in a very wide format, or not.
All I know is that when I visually compare the CultCine DVD-R to my old Fullscreen VHS copy there are a lot more details at the top and the bottom of the screen (on the VHS version…which is 4:3).

And I agree, Stanton…it can’t be a fact that this is a bad movie, because I think it is a fact that it is a pretty good one!

He says you’re right, Chris. 1,66:1 is a little wider than 4:3, just a little

hm, this SW looks very interesting (just that title itself is awesome)
i´ve seen Merino´s More dollars for Macgregors recently, so i did a small note about this one in my SW journal

Maybe a bit overrated, but not bad.

In any case even the worst SWs - and Requiem per un Gringo/Duel in the Eclipse does not belong to this category - deserve a good edition, with correct (that is to say intended) aspect ratio and uncut.

Is the brother actually called Dan Ross in the film? In the scenes I had checked he was only called Dan.

In the Italian dub he is only called Dan.

It's actually not a slicing, but there's a hand nailed by a thrown knife on a wooden jamb.

Nailed and subsequently halved.

Never seen it, but the name sure does make me want to see it!

One to see for sure Novecento !

Yeah, one of my favorites.

This is one i’m dying to see, it’s on top of my wish list.

Just like me… love those strange spaghetti westerns and this one looks really good.
Some people complain that it’s awkwardly-made (editing, directing). Hope it’s not true, and those opinions are because of this films strangeness.
And this leopard skin poncho… I’ve got to see it!

Worth viewing just for this  .

No it is not true

Well…
Need to re-watch it, but…

It’s an interesting one, I wouldn’t hold my breath for it though…

Well, for instance in some respects (visual plane, actors, direction and so on) Requiem per un gringo/Duel in the Eclipse is clearly inferior to the not dissimilar*, impressive Sentenza di morte/Death Sentence.

 • In both films we find an unconventional structure and a main character taking revenge on four guys responsible for….

Well, the two Merino films I’ve seen both have pretty strange editing and directing, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not good. I have seen WAY worse editing and directing in SW’s (and especially, worse cuts ;))!

Can’t agree. Requiem is much more impressive for me than Sentenza di morte (which is a good one), and also better directed imo. Better story anyway.
