Django Challenges Sartana / Django sfida Sartana (Pasquale Squitieri, 1970)

[quote=“Reverend Danite, post:27, topic:1699”]I like this one as well.
When I first saw it I was disappointed with it’s portrayals - particularly with Django. But, having seen so many sws since I now more appreciate it for what it is. I had a new copy arrive today which I bought on ebay which claimed to be English language with removable greek subs - altho’ fullscreen. Anyway, it would surely have been an improvement on my ol’ vhs rip.
Unfortunately, altho it is a better print - it’s in Italian with non-removable Greek subs only. Fair play to the fellah in Greece that sold me it tho’ - I got an immediate refund and can keep the disc, so it was obviously a genuine mistake. But I’m holding out now to see a better version to see it again … so where’s this print you got from I…I…Idiot? From the Sartana set maybe?
Anyway - this is the one I got today…

Most of the titles (25 in total) of these series are in English with forced Greek subs although there are 3-4 that are in Italian with forced Greek subs. There are also some titles which are sold in promo sleeves that are basically the same prints with the aforementioned series. Hot tip: don’t spend much on those dvds, they can be found here in Greece for less than 3-4 euros (they were initially sold along with some TV magazines)

This is the worst SW I’ve seen so far. Very few redeeming qualities: the music, the beggining with those zoom-ins to Sartana’s face and people going “Sartana!” and the “cornuto” joke at the end. Other than that it was very poor. Bad script (the characters know too much out of nowhere and the pacing is all over the place), bad directing (the low budget was too obvious, there was no build up and tension whatsoever for the face-offs), awful editing (although I saw an 84 minutes version that might have been cut) but at least it wasn’t too long and the acting was decent enough. I’ve seen only one Fidani so far, “Quel maledetto giorno d’inverno… Django e Sartana all’ultimo sangue”, and I enjoyed it way more than this one.
Maybe I haven’t seen enough horrible ones to appreciate this.

I agree with cochino and ION BRITTON: up to now I 've seen 150 SWs, and this one is around the eighteenth position in my Bottom 20.

In my opinion Tony Kendall/Luciano Stella is much more effective and convincing as Santana in Una pistola per cento croci/Gunman of One Hundred Crosses.

quote=“I…I…Idiot, post:12, topic:1699” If I had a guess I would say no as there is really no relation to this ‘Sartana’ / Frank Costanza look-a-like & GG’s.

As regards this moustached version of Sartana, it should be noted that strangely, almost unbelievably, the film was released five months before Buon funerale amigos!.. paga Sartana/Have a Good Funeral, My Friend… Sartana Will Pay.

I sort of liked it… the print Wild East used looks really nice… the fight scene between Django and Sartana was disappointing… but theres a fair bit of action near the end, so that saved it for me.

Well, it’s not the worst but it is missing the Fidani ‘fun factor’.
Checking the DB, I did not see Jose Jaspe or even a character called ‘Huston’. Is he really in this?
Malisa Longo as ‘Maria’? I can’t see that. She does seem familiar though.

Maria is played by Tania Alvarado, Jose Jaspe and Malisa Longo are not present in the film.

Didn’t like this too much. Main problems:

  1. Locations didn’t look very western-y
  2. The whole thing didn’t have a very authentic Spaghetti or even Western ‘feel’
  3. Story pretty hackneyed - like a buddy movie - the two ‘heroes’ are pitted against each other only to join together to avenge themselves against the conspiritor
  4. Action scenes not very good
  5. Django and Sartana played by wrong people (though this could be forgiven had it been a good movie)

The only thing I DID like about it was the end -the villain got UTTERLY HUMILIATED - he was forced to wear a Stag’s antlers on his head - then they killed him. The villainess went mad and got trampled by horses.

So overall, despite a entertaining and satisfying final 10 minutes pretty poor - 2 STARS

I think they had to change Django with sartana

nothing special and a good music…lol

have fun

Well this was a nice surprise. It may be movies like For a Few Dollars More and The Mercenary that make the Top 20 but it is movies like this that keeps watching the genre interesting.

Not a movie with an enormous budget but they make do. Django and Sartana are both well-casted in my opinion. May not have overly much to do with the originals but who expected that anyways!?

A simple but well-executed plot and a nice jazzy score. I can see that on a bad day someone may dismiss this as garbage but it really is quite fun. Recommended!

The French dvd is by the way specified as being 2.35:1 but is that really so? The Wild East-dvd I watched was 1.85:1 which seems like the correct aspect ratio.

Glad to see someone else appreciates this film too.

They clearly had fun making the movie and it was a fun watch. Anybody watching this movie and not loving it is not a true spaghetti western fan

It’s this not knowing what you are getting that keeps it fresh.

Right…i accept you’re idea…there are some subjects in this movie that made fun for me.

Had this sealed for two years and never bothered to watch it. Decided to give it a go tonight and enjoyed it a lot. Not a great film but it is very entertaining. It felt very much like a Fidani film. 3/5 stars

Another title that is currently streaming in HD on Amazon Prime
