As far as I know Brokeback isn’t a western at all, it’s set in modern times. I think it’s just been provocatively marketed as a first “gay-western”.
Correct. And the two central characters are shepherds, not cowboys. Just because they wear cowboy hats doesn’t make it a Western.
Just to add my 2 cents worth on the great Brokeback Mountain debate. I did see the film, or at least most of it, and didn’t have a problem with its content whatsoever. My only problem was it was just a bit boring and didn’t really grip me enough to keep me from surfing channels throughout.
I didn’t hate Brokeback Mountain, but didn’t really love the film either.
It’s based on a short story (yes, it’s overlong) about the impossibility to talk about things that have happened. What is not said (and cannot be said) is more important than anything else. Surpressed feelings and thoughts are more easy to describe than to show. The literary source is more suggestive than explicit, and Ang Lee has great ploblems to translate Anne Proulx’s prose to the screen.
He had similar problems earlier. Ride with the devil is not a bad movie, but almost totally lacks the sardonic humour of Daniel Woodrell’s Woe to live on, a wonderful Civil War novel, both very funny and harrowing.
Ever seen Warhol’s Lonesome Cowboys?
Anyway, I’m not disgusted by the subject matter. I’m just not interested in that type of stuff. And if it would have been a “straight” romance that wouldn’t have been different.
Interesting reading these male perspectives on Brokeback Mountain. I’ve not seen it myself, and don’t plan to…relationship films are really not my thing. The only other people i know who have seen it are all women (my brother’s wife tried to drag him to the cinema but he wouldn’t go!) and all of them went to see it for two reasons…(a) they fancied one or both of the actors inviolved, and (b) they wanted to see a couple of guys getting it on…(though they were largely disappointed with what little they got to see!). Had me scratching my head in bemusement ???
Aside from that, i do get annoyed at it being labelled a western. The amount of times i’ve heard "oh, you like westerns don’t you…etc etc… >:(
And to think, this whole Brokeback mountain discussion stemmed from my analysis of the character Bill San Antonio a couple of pages ago!!
Hopefully Sebastian won’t delete the whole discussion …

Yes…I find all this stuff very ‘boring’ indeed.
ok ok ok
BEFORE 1967 Gay/Homosexual Se-x was ILLEGAL/CRIMINAL IN UK /other countries.
The accepted/normal/religious/GOD/Bible way is the MAN - WOMAN FAMILY
NATURAL
Now times have “moved on” and we have to “accept” these bent relations but what most
decent law abiding people/Film Fans ASK is very simple and matches the ARMY CODE:
DONT ASK DONT TELL
What you do in your private bedroom KEEP it to yourself.
DO NOT force this “gay lifestyle” on Normal people & DO NOT make Films imposing it.
“Brokeback Mountain” repressed, depressed, demented , lamented “feelings”= SHAME
Now Stanton I am wondering if you have any “gay” leaning yourself as you seem very
apologetic towards this “Brokeback” atrocity ? Need Psychotherapy did you say ?
My immediate reaction to this film was repulsion and revulsion and 99% of my friends
feel the same. GOD created men and women as different and with GOOD REASON

Ha ha, now I have won a bet. Thanks SD.
I was absolutely sure that you would say this sooner or later.
No, I’m not gay, but I have nothing against homosexuals living and loving in the same way as heteros do it publicly. Why should I, why should someone else?
[quote=“Cian, post:60, topic:751”]Westerns and SW’s in particular are macho and mainly masochistic. Brokeback Mountain upsets so many fans because the implication is that the manly world of the Wild West might, just might, have had homosexuals in it!!! So many shattered fantasies…
[By the way, I haven’t seen Brokeback Mountain and never intend to][/quote]
What I would have said instead of the above ambiguous comments is :
WESTERNS SWS JOHN WAYNE AUDIE MURPHY
NORMAL FAMILY ORIENTATED VIOLENT ADVENTURES IN THE WEST
There is no “macho” or “masochistic” as such across the SW Genre but the word you
are missing is
NORMAL OR DECENT
This “brokeback Handbag mountain” does NOT shatter any “fantasies” as such but it
embarasses, repels, disgusts ordinary mothers/fathers with kids, the grannies/g- dads
It is not material that is for the MORAL MAJORITY or people with any GOOD TASTE.
This film is being forced on audiences worldwide, claiming “awards”, being a nuisance.

Now I’m sure again that you haven’t seen Brokeback Mountain, so better don’t talk about it.
Your’e a funny guy. Violence glorifying films about killing are ok, a film about love is disgusting!
One reason why this world is what it is.

I hope the bet was worth winning and you get a “proper reward” Stanton…
I read what you claim Stanton but do I believe it ? :-* :’(
Is it the “same” ? … “Love” well yes I dont think your meaning of that matches mine.
You are fixated on people watching Brokeback… :o of course we have seen it how else could we then analyse, discuss and rightfully condemn it ?
Ok SD, let’s stop it here. I know what you mean, you know what I mean.
Enough said about Proveback Mountain.
OK Stanton I know you are getting ready for your BOYS ONLY night out :-*
We will agree to disagree as most politicians say and do.
he he, wait until you read my anti Fidani tribute
