Boot Hill / La collina degli stivali (Giuseppe Colizzi, 1969)

Would love to have this, but @stanton probably bought every other copy, and will only sell it to those who put this film in their Top 20.

I want it aswell but I’m put off by the comedic cover…

It is unbelievably shit. Koch clearly kept the best cover for themselves so that more people would buy from their site.

So, it took me a while but I finally got around to watching the German Blu-ray since I’ve been revisiting Colizzi’s trilogy. The release is absolutely stunning. I’ve never seen Boot Hill look so good, the transfer is pristine! As for the film itself, I’m afraid that after two excellent instalments, Colizzi ends the trilogy with a disappointing entry. While it’s certainly not a bad film, it pales in comparison to its predecessors. There’s signs of potential and creativity. However, the plot isn’t very engaging. It’s overly simplistic and doesn’t have enough action to make up for the lack of content. Woody Strode’s character was undeveloped and his presence felt wasted. Colizzi appears to have focused so much on the visuals that he neglected everything else.

Just saw Boots Hill (or Boot Hill) for the first time. I thought it was very poor. Can’t believe it was the highest grossing Italian western in Italy in 1969, more than Sabata or Tepepa or the Sartana sequel or the two Gemma movies. Just put Terence Hill on the credits and that’s L1.5bn and you don’t need to make a decent film.

  • I saw a DVD of the extended version 94m23s Pal with about 3m of (unnecessary) scenes only in German, on the German DVD. The Italian censor site records the submission as 2734m which comes out to about 99m-100m so I guess that’s pretty much complete. I saw there was a posting some years ago about a 109m fan edit because the German version was shorter than the International version but had extra footage.
  • None of the English-speaking actors (Stander, Strode, Buono or Ciannelli) dub their own voices in English which doesn’t help. Stander’s voice is quite close to his but not the same if you’ve heard his own voice on OUATITW or Beyond the Law.
  • The script was awful and unfocussed. The first five minutes - what was the point of that? It took nearly 40m before Hill met Spencer. At one point it looked as if Strode was the main character but he largely disappeared towards the end.
  • Half the big fight at the end seemed to be missing and the ending was very abrupt and looked to have been cut. It was not clear (to me) whether Stander’s character died or not and the chief villain just put his gun down and was seen no more.
  • A surprising amount of what appeared to be implied homosexuality. Was this intentional or unintentional? Eastman playing a character called ā€˜Baby Doll’ who was shacked up with Spencer. Even the elderly commissioner was sharing a bedroom with his aide/servant.
  • Some of the direction was good, such as the early stalking of Hill in the town but the movie just did not flow properly and had lots of irrelevancies.

PS - I realise some on the database seem to really like the film but I am one of the 50% who rate it a 2 out of 5. No UK theatrical release. The International version (91-92m Pal) released on video and DVD although Amazon reviewers report poor print quality.

The thing with this trilogy is that it’s budget rose while its writing diminished…

The trilogy peaked with ace high imo, it’s the most stylistically unique entry. It finds it’s own identity and has a really strong direction.

I loved God forgives I don’t on the first watch, enough to buy a bluray of it, but on rewatches it loses a lot of it’s magic as it’s quite generic and lacks direction. Boot Hill is weaker for sure tho.
