Alternative Top 20

Morgan would you like to give me a couple of alternatives for these?

The Wind’s Anger is set in Spain and O’Cangaceiro is set in Brazil in the 1920s. As such neither really qualify as westerns for the purpose of this list. Pick another couple and I’ll add them in.

It will be like this then:

1 Tepepa
2 El Puro
3 The Bounty Killer
4 California
5 Sonora
6 I Want Him Dead
7 And the Crows Will Dig Your Grave
8 10.000 Dollars for a Massacre
9 The Long Days of Vengeance
10 The Ultimate Killer
11 Cost of Dying
12 A Minute to Pray, A Second to Die
13 Terrible Day of the Big Gundown
14 Hate Is My God
15 Death Played the Flute
16 Challenge Of The McKennas
17 God Forgives … I don’t
18 Why Go on Killing?
19 Bandidos
20 A Pistol for Ringo

Stanton has by the way accepted both films as eligible for the Official top 20.

That’s great. Thanks.
All done now.

Well, that’s Stanton for you. Always accommodating. I on the other hand am a traditionalist stickler.

To put it more exactly, it was the forum which accepted them as eligible. I’m only another forum slave, and do what the forum wants me to do.

In some cases there was a discussion what is eligible and what not, and a solution was found.

I personally see both in a slightly wider sense as a part of the genre, while e.g. I personally do not view Red Sun as a Spag, but the majority here does.

My alternate top 20

  1. Mannaja a man called blade
  2. Blindman
  3. Cutthroats 9
  4. The Specialist
  5. Django prepare a coffin

  15. California
  16. Johnny Hamlet

That’s what I call a courageous list. :stuck_out_tongue: Are you sure 3 Bullets for a long gun is a SW?

It’s South African but growing up I always classed it as a spaghetti same as taste of a savage is a Mexican movie but it looks and feels like a spaghetti , just some different titles that I personally love but may not be to everyone’s taste

Of course you are free to class it as whatever you like but I’m afraid I can’t include it for this list. No Italian connection of any kind as far as I’m aware. Or Spanish which I am usually fine with. Let me know of any title you’d like to replace it with. :relaxed:

I’ve updated my spreadsheet for this list and will update the page sometime over Christmas/New Year so if anyone wants to add a list or make changes to their previous now’s the time.
Interestingly, as it stands El Puro will be dropping off the list this time around. The new entry will be Bandidos. It’s all very close to be honest and an extra vote here and there can make quite a difference as this list has always been based on one point for each entry rather than the descending scale based on specific order that we use for the Official Top 20.

I’ve also updated my own list which has a handful of changes from the original. All a bit arbitrary really as the ones which have come in could be at least a handful of others and the ones which dropped off are still firm favourites. On any other day 25% of the list would probably be different.

Anyway, in no particular order, here’s my new list.

1 $10,000 Blood Money
2 The Ruthless Four
3 Johnny Hamlet
4 Bandidos
5 Fury of Johnny Kid
6 A Minute to Pray, a Second to Die
7 Forgotten Pistolero
8 Tepepa
9 El Puro
10 The Bounty Killer
11 Blindman
12 Hole in the Forehead
13 Death Sentence
14 The Specialists
15 Johnny Yuma
16 Sabata
17 Vengeance
18 God Forgives, I Don’t
19 Hellbenders
20 Killer Kid

Nice list, Phil!

In no strict order:

Johnny Hamlet
Tepepa
1000 on the Black
Hellbenders
Bandidos
The Dirty Outlaws
The Bounty Killer
A Pistol For Ringo
If You Meet Sartana, Pray For Your Death
Navajo Joe
And God Said to Cain
Django, Prepare a Coffin
Johnny Yuma
California
Black Jack
El Puro
Massacre Time
Today it’s Me… Tomorrow You!
I am Sartana, Your Angel of Death
Light the fuse… Sartana is Coming

Thanks Dean. Your list has been added to the spreadsheet. I’ll update the page in a few days. It’s all very close around the 20 mark current;y. One vote either way could see a film drop out or come in to the bottom of the published list.

After seeing your list I went and ordered A Minute to Pray, a Second to Die, Hole in the Forehead, Death Sentence & Fury of Johnny Kid. English releases of The Specialists & Vengeance are proving harder to find.

would love to see a dvd English friendly of The Specialists

My usual New Year update of the Alternative Top 20 has been completed as promised. You can check it out here: [Alternative Top 20 - The Spaghetti Western Database]

A bit of place shuffling since last year but the big change was the new entry of Bandidos at the cost of losing El Puro. A bit like finding sixpence and losing a tanner for me but hopefully El Puro will find its way back onto the list before too long.

In truth there is a bunch of films only a point or two out so a number of changes are possible without too many more votes coming in.

In my view my old list (Reply #213) is still sufficiently strong, but for a greater uniformity I replace Man, Pride & Vengeance with Crispino’s John the Bastard.
