A Man Called Sledge (Vic Morrow, 1970)

Watching the German Blu-Ray disc, but is hardly an upgrade to the R1 dvd I already have.

I haven’t gotten to watch much in a while so it was good to get to see one. SPOILERS in post

I watched A Man called Sledge at the weekend having never seen it before. For me it is worth a watch and combines some good passages and scenes with some pretty tedious stuff.

Sledge and friend ride into town at the start - not sure what happened with shooting the guy in the stagecoach or the point of it. Good scene in the bar after the card game with some shooting. The old man is introduced and we had some good horse scenes and snow landscapes.

Next is the premise of the gold in the cell in the US army prison and we return to another town where in another bar the organ is knocked into the floor by sledge’s former comrades/gang members. Everyone seems to know Sledge. Then they load up on ammunition and weapons and clash with the sheriff, the ā€œtwo bit Wyatt Earpā€. Some good action here with shooting and the escape on the horses.

Sledge’s buddies dancing about is an awful scene yahooing and planning to go for the gold. The gold escort is an impressive outfit and Sledge aimlessly rides up to them and they close up ranks.

The scenes with Sledge getting into the prison and getting free drags and drags but eventually they get outside into the yard for some good shooting and lads falling off walls. Sledge’s gang members do a bit here and there to help overall. They escape then and clash again with the sheriff and his posse.

The film moves to the village then which is an impressive location and an excellent looking ruined church and the festival going on. Now the card games and the gang falling apart which sets the finale up nicely. The evil gang members assault Sledge’s girl. But it is like they were running out of filming time or money as instead of a showdown with any intrigue or suspense, Sledge just shoots the lads as they jump or walk out in front of him.

The movie combines quite good parts with some bits that drag so three stars overall. Well known Phil Coulter is co- credited with the lyrics.
