Ok, I haven’t seen Joe Kidd for decades, only thought of a photo from that film with Clint holding this gun.
Hughes in his small “pocket essential” book about SWs also says something about stuff from TGS turning up in Eastwoods US westerns, but then it was only this gun and the hat, and the gun wasn’t even carried by Clint.

The Mauser Silence uses isn’t the same model Joe Kidd uses. Silence uses the original Mauser invented in 1896 (C96). Joe Kidd has the M712 with rapid fire function (Schnellfeuer), if I remember correctly. This model was invented in 1932 and is an anachronistic part in this movie.

Did he really say that Joe Kidd was a remake? Would have been quite a remake then. I’ve heard about these rumours that Clint had planned a remake of Il Grande Silenzio (don’t know what’s their origin) and I guess Cox heard these rumours too, but turning Joe Kidd into a remake is of course pure nonsense.
On page 124 of Alex Cox’s original ‘Ten Thousand Ways To Die’ (intended as a thesis at UCLA in 1978, then a book, but unseen until the ‘miracle of .pdf’ in 2005), the author mentions one of the more elusive titles of the genre:
The Bad men also adopt priestly garb at times - partially to offend, partially because the trappings of the church appeal to the exotic tastes of the more eccentric villains. Baldwin, one of the villains in DEATH SENTENCE, dresses like a preacher and calls his gang deacons. He rides off leaving the wounded hero to meditate on his sins. Yancey Hobbitt in BLOOD MONEY drives a church on wheels; one of the hired men to kill Sabata calls himself “Father Brown;” Indio preaches to his men from the pulpit of a ruined mission.
Some of the Good men dress up too: among the later heroes we encounter REVERENDO COLT; and the bounty hero of CHRYSANTHEMUMS FOR A LOAD OF CARRION (sic) disguises himself as a friar.
