That was a real tight one. We were every bit as good as France, nothing to feel shame for. Tough to take though, for sure.
My thoughts at first as well. Why not let Foden take it? On the other hand, if someone else than Kane wouldâve taken it and missed, everyone would ask the question âWhy not Kane?â
True of course. Well, the decision was taken, the penalty missed and we canât change the outcome
Well done to France.
No complaints, theyâre the World Champions for a reason.
Superb from Morocco. Finished ahead of Croatia and Belgium, beat Spain on penalties and defeated Portugal.
The other quarter-final was a high quality match and the most evenly balanced of the tournament. England had France on the floor in the second-half yet couldnât land the killer blow and paid for it.
Griezmann probably the difference and anyone can miss a penalty. Changing an expert penalty taker makes no sense, irrespective of the situation.
Brazilian referee absolutely atrocious and out of his depth.
France will retain the title now.
The first semi-final was a disappointng affair. Croatia not able to find a hole in the Argentine wall, Argentina quick and agile on the break, resulting in a logical 3-0 win. I had expected a bit more from Croatia. I had my doubts about that penalty, btw.
Why disappointing?
Cause Argentina was so much better?
Yes, thatâs one of the reasons. For a semi-final in a world cup you expect a tight, exciting, dramatic game. This looked more like an average game in a national league.
What a great final to watch. Absolutely amazing game of football. Iâm happy for Messi. Really deserved.
It wasnât a great tournament, but luckily we got a great finale. This match had everything you want to see in a world cup final: excitement, drama, great goals, teams showing determination and willpower. Messi deserves the world title, of course, heâs no doubt the best player of the last 15 years and one of the very best players in history, on the same level as PelĂ©, Cruijff, Beckenbauer, Maradona ⊠That said, I think France deserved to win the game. Argentina was the better team in the first half, no doubt about that, but once the French really got back into the game the Argentines looked pale in comparison and especially in extra-time the French had them cornered, but failed to launch the killer punch.
Fair play to Argentina (if thatâs not a contradiction in terms) for ultimately outlasting a curiously flat France in the final. Similar to the quarter-final, the Argentines sat back on a 2-0 lead and nearly paid for it. Great title winning save by Martinez at the death from Muani.
Unless youâre German, a World Cup penalty shootout against Argentina is a foregone conclusion. Although Martinezâs unsporting antics during the shootout clearly unnerved at least one opponent.
Thereâs been three new winners of the World Cup in half a century and no successful title defence for sixty years. But the gap between the usual suspects and everyone else is narrowing.
Go Manchester!
