I think now you’re overdoing it. they were tremendously successful and have fans to this day. they were corney Euro-centrice pastiches of the Western, of course, but those are the hallmarks of many Eurowesterns. they’re a lot less “adult” than the rest of the Eurowesterns, but then again Karl May’s books are the source, and those are already more fairytales than anything else really. these are nostalgic family friendly sunday afternoon westerns today

. But this is just my personal opinion. May father, he is actually 74 years old, won’t recognize them as real western movies. But they had success and they are recommended by many people. But in my opinion , they are nothing of any interest. Sorry, I don’t wanted to hurt anybody about his relations to the so called Karl-May-Movies. Sorry for hurting the fans of Karl…..this was not my intention. And a big sorry to Timothy, he has obviously a great interest in such flicks. Love you all….

And still there is a totally surprising full frontal nudity scene in Old Shatterhand. I have no idea how that was possible in these days in such a film.

I even ordered Alias Smith & Jones several years ago,but after the initiated focused SW collecting 2018,since Iiked the actor Pete Duel and watchable 16 years old. In spite of that I think I only rewatched one or two episodes…I had remembered some good music - but that was rare just a short theme or intstrumentation in the background as I remember (not listened to it in 50 years now) with the second Hannibal Heyes who had less charisma IMO.The main theme -shit IMO:-)

years gone by and personal taste changes….At the age of 10 I liked Karl-May-Movies…And today I think they are typically German and boring to the bone movies, which I don’t want to watch anymore ..stiff acting and old men’s humor, doesn’t fit for me today. But I like SWs and maybe other people have the same feelings for SWs like I do for the so called Karl-May-Movies. Haven’t watched Alias Smith, in Germany it was not a really big thing , I guess.
I thought the first 2 Winnetou movies were good and also Old Shatterhand. But the rest are quite mediocre except for Among Vultures which had some better scenes and characters; almost exactly the same plot and plot twists in each of the last six or so. I was surprised they got so many movies out of it and they didn’t change the tone at all after the Italian westerns started coming out. In the last Rialto one, they set the action south of the border and still put poor old Rod Cameron in a Davy Crockett costume with a coonskin hat. Action scenes very choppy and look to have been self-censored in several of the movies.
I can still hum the theme tune for Alias Smith and Jones which I used to watch when I was a wee nipper. It was commissioned as a TV version of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Pete Duel, also in Cannon for Cordoba, was the real star and when he died and had to be replaced his replacement, Roger Davis, was undistinguished. Co-star Ben Murphy was also a bit feeble and when he was given his own series, Gemini Man, that crashed and burned.

This century I haven´t watched a TV series or TV nearly at all in 10 years. (BUT (A long way : OFF TOPIC) watched Jeremy Brett in Sherlock Holmes (41 episodes Granada) a couple of times with my clever wife HIS manners are great ! Even if the deduction is not that completely logically/mathematically proved…
I confess after having watched all my 7-10 ratings SW maybe 7-10 times since 2018 start as aficionado except for the Leone´s 4 first which I had seen before since the 1970’s or so, I for the second Spain half-year “vacation” in a row have taken a break except for the latest few aquisitions with the The Specialists as a probable new 7/10 the first in some years )
I’ve watched a couple of the Winnetou films in the original German language years ago on YouTube and thought they were pretty good and well made throwbacks to the old serials that were made here in the States in the 1930’s and early 40’s. I’m really excited for the Eureka! set and plan on picking up the rest of the Winnetou series as I have cousins the right age who will get a kick out of them. Yeah, they’re kind of dated and have a superficial look, but they’re still loads of fun and just good old fashioned adventure tales. There’s not a lot of English friendly written material on Karl May other than that he was something of a con man - luckily with no malicious intentions and the Nazis attempt to propagandize his work for the Aryan crap, but he did manage to create something special that still lives on in Germany, Austria and other areas of Europe, even if it’s just from curiosity and camp value.
