Read the comics!
The comics are better working than the film, even if it was a very close adaption.
And the 300 comic is far better than the movie.

I watched lock stock and two barrels by guy ritchie. Ig i am not mistaken you hear the clock music from for a few dollars more in the great killing scene, anybody else heard that.
very nice movie even if you cannot speak of a spaghetti influence aside from this little musical bit.
Halloween the 2007 remake version by Rob Zombie.
A bit of a mixed bag affair this one, but better than I expected.
The early scenes showing a young Michael Myers were interesting, with some genuine compelling moments.
However, once Michael has grown up is where I was less impressed, as things just come across as a âgrungeâ reworking of class Carpenter moments.
The camera work here just does not match the work on the Carpenter original.
I did read some where that the âHalloweenâ theme was originally not going to be used, but eventually used due to fan preasure.
How true this is I do not knowâŚ
Malcolm McDowell this time takes over the Dr. Loomis role, originally played of course by Donald Pleasence.
The main thing about the Donald Pleasence portrayel of Loomis, is the guy is so obsessed!, and McDowell just cannot beat this level of intensity.
So, did we need a Halloween remake ?..perhaps not, but the Halloween franchise is âbigâ money and I am sure this will not be the last oneâŚ

I planned to do that, but so far âŚ
Still, I think both films arenât bad at all.
Sin City is very well executed; itâs a feast for the eye and most actors turn it good performances. Of course the homage to film noir and the hard-boiled novels that created the special atmosphere in the first place (Dashiel Hammett, Raymond Chandler, Ross McDonald, James M. Cain etc.) is overdone, but I guess the Miller books were paying homage to those things too, so you canât blame Rodriguez for that. Being a great admirer of those writers (especially Chandler and McDonald) I was very, very sceptical, but I enjoyed both the homage and the movie.
300 is a different story, so to speak. I donât know if itâs paying homage to anybody or anything. Certainly not to the historical events that took place at Thermopilae. I read somewhere that this movie âshowed everything homosexuels would like to have admired in historical action movies from Ben Hur to Gladiatorâ. I suppose this was referring to the barely dressed males hacking each other to pieces, an image never seen before in main stream movies, at least not on this scale. Well, Iâm not homosexual so I wasnât sexually aroused by the butchery, but still found the bloodletting quite riveting.
I would say: forget history, enjoy the stylish trash.
What wonders me is in what way the book were that much better.
I donât blame Rodriguez.
I also liked the film, but I canât explain it, for one reason or another the comics are more fascinating. Maybe Rodriguez had stayed too close to the comics, not realising that both are different mediums, so an adaption which doesnât pay attention to this differences, even if it comes as close to the books as one can wish, could fail nevertheless to keep the essence of Millerâs very special style.
Sin City is great to look at, but somehow feels a bit empty, like nearly all of Rodriguez films. But I like his films nevertheless.
But Sin City is far from being a disaster like the adaptions of Alan Mooreâs comics (From Hell ; The League of Extraordinary Gentlemens). Even V for Vendetta, which at least had tried to stay faithful to Mooreâs book, betrays his vision, intelligence and his complexity by reducing the material too much, so that in the end it also does not really work.
300 uses Millerâs book to create something own, which is very different, even if most of the ideas come (or seem to come) straight out of the book. The fascistoid adjusting of the film e.g. is inspired by the book, but itâs there only as a tendency.
I was disappointed (and bored) by the 300 film while viewing it, but maybe a 2nd view will reveal somthing interesting.
(I liked Snyderâs Dawn of the Dead remake.)
If you are interested in complex and highly intellectual narratives, Alan Moore, who is sort of a genius, is an absolute recommendation. And heâs always entertaining.
Frank Miller is not as versatile, but has also made several brillant comics.
Both have done things which most filmmakers nowadays donât dare to do.
@ Stanton
Never really got into comics, but have heard of both Miller and Moore.
Theyâre on my list.
There has been much talk about the alleged fascistoid character of 300.
Of course, I also thought of Leni von Riefenstahlâs Triumph des Willens and Olympia when I watched it, but the glorification of the human body, the sacrification of oneâs life (for a course or nation) and all these things that were criticized and associated with fascism, have been part of more philosophies or historical/cultural movements than just fascism/national socialism.
Like I said: I donât think 300 has much to do with history, but if so, it refers to a defensive war, not really the idea of war and battle national socialism is identified with. And Sparta, abysmal as it may have been, was not really an expansist city-state. The Greek that dreamt of world domination was not a Spartan.
STRAIGHTHEADS (2007)
The second film from '07 (after OUTLAW) about retaliation, getting even
Gillian Anderson (from X-files and Bleak House fame) and her young boyfriend Danny Dyer (who actually was in OUTLAW) are gang raped and mugged and decide to take revenge.
I thought OUTLAW was well-made but ultimately pointless and nasty. This film has a less one-dimensional approach to the subject and more interesting characters (especially Andersonâs middle aged woman is well portrayed); the first half of the movie is very intense and compelling, but somewhere both the director and scriptwriter loose control over the material. Itâs as if neither of them knows where to go with the story. There are some loose ends (I would have liked to learn more about the relationship between Anderson and her father), the ending is brutal but not convincing and the âcharacter twistâ is predictable.
Still itâs worth a look and much better than you might think, considering the subject.
So: recommended, but not too highly ⌠(or, like Phil would say: a solid 3 out of 5; or if you prefer SD: my vote for the brutal and engrossing STRAIGHTHEADS is 13.2 out of 20)
Just sat thru a sleazy double bill of Centrefold Girls and Barn Of The Naked Dead! ;D
Sounds interesting ;D.
Am probably gonna watch Red Sun(Delon, Mifune, Bronson) this afternoon since I bought it on dvd last week and are very much looking forward to seeing it again.
Saw Lâinfermiera di notte aka Nachtschwester musste man sein. Starring Gloria Guida and actually pretty funny. After a couple of skin-less spaghetti westerns its nice to throw one of these on where you know boobs will get thrown in your face every other minute
I tried to watch ESCAPE TO ATHENA (1979, George pan Cosmatos)
Yes, I tried
One of the worst films Iâve ever seen. A film about POWs who try to escape from a Greek Stalag and steel some jewelry at the same time.
If Telly Savallas is cast as the leader of the Greek resistence movement and Roger Moore as a nazi officer, you know you are in deep trouble
And what made things even worse: for no discernable reason a) the disc wrongfully thought it was widescreen, so I had to adjust it manually, and b) went back to the initial menu - and widescreen - at every chapter stop, so I had to start it all over again, click the right chapter and adjust the image manually âŚ
After some five or six chaptercrashes I gave up, so Iâll problably never know the outcome âŚ
(Not recommended)
I do not mind ESCAPE TO ATHENA, but nothing great though.
It was ;D Though Barn of The Naked Dead is missing a scene and a rather dodgy bit with a snake has been trimmed! Centrefold girls is more fun, but rather worryingly, my sympathies are pretty much with the nutter ![]()
Anyway, currently watching the cheesy goodness that is Van Dammeâs âDouble Impactâ. JeezâŚme and my brother saw this film THREE times at the cinema!!! :-[
Viewed Galaxy of Terror last night.
O.K fun sort of film where you just watch and go along with the ride and do not think that much, and the story of the first part of the film reminded me very much of Aliens.
A young Robert Englund and the usual bearded Sid Haig star in supporting roles.
Not a film but a soccer game. The Netherlands vs. Croatia(or the other way around, donât really knowâŚ)
Just watched Midway(76â).Suspenseful WW2 movie with an all-star cast.
Howâs Fonda in it?
Fonda was excellent as always, but looked much older than he did when he played frank in OUTW.
Ok it was last nightâŚTriumph Of The Ten Gladiators. Hadnât really seem many peplums before but it turned out to be pretty good fun
