Just finished the Robert Redford snooze fest, ‘All is Lost’ … Jesus H. what a pile of crap!
Was it a bigger snoze fest than JERAMIAH JOHNSON?
‘Jeremiah Johnson’ is a classic !!! … and Redford made great movies throughout the 70s, barely a duffer.
So, that was one reason I watched this - if I could stand to see it again it would be unintentionally hilarious, it’s that bad.
I enjoyed it. Loved the wind, sea and flapping sail sound effects. Cracking dialogue too.
Redford did make classic movies in the 70s no denying that. I have even watched THE WAY WE WERE.
Maybe I was too young for JOHNSON🤔?
Could be.
I would definitely recommend a rewatch. It’s a very good film imo
’Only God forgives’ (2013)
Picked up a BD copy with no clue about the movie, except that I’d enjoyed the director’s previous one, ‘Drive’, when I’d expected nothing from it.
Having now experienced this, I can’t give away too much, or even recommend it for general audiences … but it certainly held my attention, and could be the blackest comedy ever … if you look at it that way.
Very violent, slow paced, minimal dialogue and beautifully made.
Yes, I can’t say I was especially impressed with Only God Forgives when I first saw it (apart from its arresting aesthetic) but it stayed with me and, in the end, I had to buy the blu-ray. I’m still unsure on one or two aspects of the movie, but then again if I was insistant on such luxuries as a completely coherent plot I doubt I’d be into Italian westerns.
The Neon Demon (Refn, 2016) is closer in tone to Only God Forgives than to Drive but I took to that one immediately. Maybe I was more prepared for it having already wrestled with Only God Forgives. Valhalla Rising remains very much on my ever-expanding “to watch” list.
‘Bronson’ (2008) was the one I bailed on, about half way through. I was sceptical about a film which seems to indulge an infamous dickhead … and perhaps aid his folk hero status. The world seems to love Tom Hardy, so this movie got more positive response than ‘Only God Forgives’
Clearing Mr Winding Refn is a talented and thoughtful director … but not for the masses (thank god!)
I always watch films alone, so there’s no-one to influence my feelings. Well, it’s interesting that one film gets a 5.8 imdb score … usually denoting absolute crap, the one I found boring gets a 7.1
I will check out those other movies when I’ve cleared my in tray
Only God Forgives is fantastic, and Winding Refn belongs to the most interesting directors of the last 20 years. Time to check his TV series Too Old to Die Young.
Ah, yes. Only God Forgives. Thanks for reminding me that this piece of utterly pretentious cinematic horse shit exists.
It’s a comedy!
Look at the scene when Kristen Scott Thomas is describing the rivalry between her two sons - and I won’t give it away here … but it’s so utterly outrageous, that it makes QT’s stuff look timid.
I think its highly entertaining and fascinating stuff. Very cinematic.
I rewatched the GOAT itself last night(GBU). Still incredible. I almost passed out a few times at how incredible it was. I’ve seen the film hundreds of times by now, and it still isn’t old.
I just put on my #3 favourite film of all time Escape From New York featuring the legendary Lee Van Cleef.
All hail the Dook of Neu Yourk!
Watched this last night with the wife.
Black comedy is I guess the best description. Whichever, it was really enjoyable. Weird, funny, ridiculous but always entertaining. We’ve watched a few Danish films since our trip their last summer and have been really impressed. This one I would definitely recommend
Tried this one last night and quit after about 40 minutes - There was no empathy with the main character, a wannabe model, played by Elle Fanning, whom we’re told is not only stunningly beautiful but has that oh so rare ‘Je ne sais quoi’ … ok, so beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and all that, but … nahhhh … suspension of disbelief only goes so far.
The world of modelling has zero interest for me, and this movie did nothing to change my view. I suppose it was attempting to say how superficial and damaging this industry can be, seemingly without looking in it’s own backyard, this film was guilty of the same.
This morning I had a look at some IMDB reviews, as usual ranging from 10/10 “masterpiece!” to 1/10 “I’ll never get those 2 hours back again!” … I’m taking a wild guess, but I don’t think I missed anything life changing by not seeing this through … what I did see was boring and badly acted … 40 minutes I’ll never get back again !!!
I was watching The Beast starring Klaus Kinski for a while but it was quite one-dimensional so I turned it off. Now I have on Johnny Oro starring Mark Damon which I have seen before and actually remember enjoying. It’s certainly not one of Corbucci’s best (he might be second best after Leone but unlike Corbucci, in my opinion, Leone never made a bad film). At least it’s not The White the Yellow and the Black.
I watched Killer Crocodile from 88 Films this afternoon. I meant to watch it earlier in June for an exact 40th Anniversary tribute of Jaws as it was one of the last rip-off killer animals films, but the Pandemic has all the days gelling together, so I lost track. Pretty well made for a low budget affair, and the croc is actually pretty realistic save for his eyes never moving.
