That too looked awful… lots of CG FX that looked like a retarded dead clown made them. Man horror has gone down the toilet give me Hammer or Amicus anyday of the week over that tripe.
Not a CG FX man myself either but I would love to see a movie with special effects made by a retarded dead clown … Must be something quite unique ![]()
Good comments. I hate it when friends get all high and mighty that someone who was previously in big name films is later appearing in less well budgeted stuff. I just see it that at least they are still working and providing for their families. It’s comparable i guess to someone working in the city and then having to become a nightwatchman or cleaner or something…there’s no shame in it. As long as the actor isn’t just sleepwalking the role or showing contempt for what they’re appearing in (which i have seen before). With Henriksen, have to say my favourite role of his is actually in Pumpkinhead. With another actor it could have been just another vengeful character in any old horror film but he brought such an overwhelming sadness and then guilt to the role, it kind of elevates the film IMO. And that monster wasn’t bad either!
And what is ironic about Peter Cushing is his biggest movie in terms of fame and gross ticket sales was one of his last… His horror career led to something bigger and better… The best thing that Lucas ever did in my opinion. Cushing really loved being in Star Wars and he hoped to come back in the sequels had they not killed Tarkin. He also auditioned for the role of Obi Wan… knowing that I wish it had happened. Peter Cushing loved his fans and whatever movies he was in and I read the late Alec Guinness was a crank and hated the Star Wars attention… too bad so sad. Not like everyone gets to be a series that is loved literally by millions of people.
Yes i’d always read that Cushing was always a gentlemanly and gracious guy in real life…and the same for Guiness, he really did seem to have some real contempt for the Star Wars series! As they say, if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all!
Cushing loved his fans and he truly enjoyed being a horror icon. A gentleman all the way he is sorely missed. ![]()
I actually liked part 3 as one of the best. Do you know if you saw the R rated cut, or the unrated version? The R rated version has a good amount cut out of it… Its certainly a lower tier of entertainment, but I like it quite a bit.
I also got to see part 4 in the theater. I probably like it more than I would normally because of that.
and here’s the entire series…
Hellraiser
Hellbound: Hellraiser II
Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth
Hellraiser: Bloodline
Hellraiser: Inferno
Hellraiser: Hellseeker
Hellraiser: Deader
Hellraiser: Hellworld
I’ve seen all of 'em also. For some reason or another, I always have to watch all the new sequels in this series. Parts 5 & 6 are alright, although one of them(can’t remember which) is basically a scene for scene ripoffs of Jacob’s Ladder. The other is more or less the same. Hellworld is one of the worst pieces of shit I’ve ever seen…
To be honest i’m not sure. I sure on UK dvd, with an 18 rating but that’s probably the same rating an R version would have got. It didn’t look cut but you never know! And despite saying disappointed, i did still enjoy it just missed that more claustrophobic atmosphere of the first two…
Yes, definitely a complete departure from the first 2 films… Lately I haven’t been as impressed with part 2 on recent rewatches. Seems to have lost all its impact for me
I believe it’s Hellseeker or Inferno that have the Jacob’s Ladder feel to it.
at the risk of being bushwhacked by you gang of varmints, i thought the first Hellraiser is good, but hated the sequels, proberly the second one the worst of all!only seen up to Hellraiser 5 but that’s enough for me. i loved Drag Me To Hell, thought it was a breath of fresh air considering all the horror remakes lately and a triumphant return to horror for Sam Raimi. just my humble opinion, and each to his own and all that! two things i would agree with, is Dog Soldiers isn’t very good and Peter Cushing certainly loved his fans, and was a complete gentleman.
I plan to throw on an old favourite - The Bounty Killer. For some reason I’ve not yet watched my SPO DVD of the film even though I’ve had it for several years.
No risk here. The sequels are not good movies
I’m starting to agree with you about the 2nd one being pretty bad… it used to be my favorite but now it just seems kind of dull and cheesy(in a bad way).
Yeah its one of those, but it seems like I remember them both following that same kind of plot line. One of them though, seems like a glaring copyright infringement. There seem to be several scenes which were directly lifted from Jacob’s Ladder, as well as the style, and the entire advancement of the story and locations
The first Hellraiser is amazing. It’s one of my favorites and the 2nd I enjoy a lot as well. I like the low budget FX in it.
I gave up after part 2, which didn’t grab me.
Hellraiser itself, as others have said, is one of the greatest modern horror films.
The first one is a modern horror classic indeed. I thought the direct follow up was pretty decent, though not as good as the original. But then, what second part is? (apart from The Godfather). As a police film the fourth part (Inferno) isn’t that horrible. It’s more of a supernatural thriller than a horror film. Still, along with Hellworld, it’s the weakest of the bunch. Hellworld starts out pretty bad, as a teeny horror flick like I know what you did last summer, but gets a bit better. Part IV was chronologically interesting, especially the Toy Maker part. The third part was enjoyable in a cheesy way. I liked the asshole night club owner. Deader was quite alright and Hellseeker saw Kirsty return, wich was a nice touch. Overall Hellraiser is alright for a horror series. The Friday the 13th or Halloween movies are generally much weaker in my book. Must say that I think Bota directed too many of them, all of them in eastern Europe if I’m not mistaken. I think the should try something new. Place the Lament Configuration in the Wild West or something. Ringo vs Pinhead perhaps, shot in Almeria.
watching another Bava tonight " Blood and Black Lace". bad L i think you have a good idea there RINGO VS PINHEAD.
Video store swag o’ the week:
Red Rings of Fear (German DVD as Enigma Rosso)
Pyjama Girl Case
They Live by Night/Side Street
Raw Deal (A. Mann)
Hey, Korano…
Those Mann Noirs (SIDE STREET and RAW DEAL) are pretty good–I especially like the latter.
A mate lent me the documentary on the Sex Pistols, The Filth and the Fury which was very good and of interest to any other old punks like me. Not often you see John Lydon fighting back tears as he does here when talking of Sid Viscious’ death. Very well made and a timely viewing for me as I am off to see Lydon and the reformed Public Image Limited at the Electric Ballroom in Camden on tuesday. The first gig I’ve been to in ages and one I’m very much looking forward to.
