I think Anthony Steffen is underrated, I feel like everyone that says he can only do his stone-faced thing are folks that have only seen his most famous and accessible stuff. And he’s done more SW’s as a leading man than anyone (I believe), so I’m gonna have to extend my list to my top 10 Anthony Steffen movies.
7 Dollars on the Red (1966)
$1000 on the Black (1966)
A Train For Durango (1968)
Blood at Sundown (1965)
Gentleman Killer (1967)
Django the Bastard (1969)
A Coffin For The Sherriff (1965)
No Room to Die (1969)
Ringo Face of Revenge (1967)
W Django (1971)
I don’t have any Steffen favourites, I don’t think ive seen enough of his films yet. In the ones I have seen, he comes across as a poor mans Clint Eastwood, complete with stubble drawn on his face using charcoal. This is apparent especially in Return of Arizona Colt
When I watched them perhaps three years ago I put down DMDC as below average, Garringo as avarege. Today I don’t remember much of them. As you have pointed me in the right direction before, I’ll give Garringo another try. The Explosive Media BR is on its way.
Garringo did rise some in my esteem after watching the Explosive Media BR, from a little below average to a little above. Good film for Steffen. Still a little too old fashioned for my morbid taste (the leading citizens respectable, the lawmen honest and the women lovable).
So, after my Steff fest I thought I should put some kind of preference list here.
The first 3 pretty much picked themselves for me but after that it all becomes a bit arbitrary. But the thread says top 5 so here are my top 5 (probably)
Killer Kid
Django the Bastard
Seven Dollars on the Red
$1000 on the Black
Shango
The next half a dozen or so would be interchangeable from the following:
Ringo, the Face of Revenge
Gentleman Killer
Dead Men Don’t Count
No Room to Die
A Few Dollars for Django
Apocalypse Joe
Man Who Cried for Revenge
A Coffin for the Sheriff
