Viva Django / Django, Prepare a Coffin / Preparati la bara! (Ferdinando Baldi, 1968)

I saw this earlier in the week and have emailed Arrow about it but no explanation as yet. I have a check disc from them for review purposes (will post my review here tomorrow) and I can confirm it has exactly the same content as the 14th Jan release except with different cover and without the 8 page booklet from Howard Hughes. Even the menu page is the same.

It would appear to be a special deal with Sainsbury’s and only available in their shops, not even online.

As you say, very odd indeed.

Nice opening titles; they’re done in the style of the Lucky Luke comics. Finally, a reason to watch Little Rita of the West! Or maybe not… ;D

My review of the UK DVD release of this one is now up and you can check it out here:

In short, it’s a nice quality DVD and well worth getting but why they have also put out a cheap vanilla version a week earlier is still a mystery. My presumption is the temptation of getting thousands of copies in supermarkets all over the country, even at this massively reduced price, was far too heavy to ignore.

(....) director Ferdinando Baldi presented Terence Hill to producer Manolo Bolognini and the relative newcomer’s likeness to Nero was sufficient to get him the part.

In reality the producer knew very well Girotti because at the age of 16 he made a film (La vena d’oro) directed by Bolognini’s brother Mauro.

The point was that done up as Django Hill passed close enough to Nero to convince Bolognini. Hill had obviously been around for a while but he didn’t have any real star status at this point. That would change of course.

Call me crazy I still don’t see any resemblance between Nero and Hill.

Yes, Arrow have released two editions. One cheaper without booklet/reversible cover.

Yeah I just saw this too! Very odd they didn’t release it at the same time as the DVD. Maybe trying to get people to double dip  Well I don’t think I will be double dipping…I am quite content with the DVD.

Of course they want people to pay out again, no other reason to release a blu so quickly after a DVD, it would be different if the DVD had been out a couple of years. And they’re no doubt trying to trick people putting Franco Nero on the cover.

Or maybe something about Django Unchained.

Make them think it’s something it isn’t.

The U.K. release of Django springs to mind, new cover design very similar to Django Unchained. No doubt done on purpose to trick the casual buyer into a purchase who at a glance may think they are buying the Tarantino film.

Just saw this one tonight actually. Really good, Terrence Hill does a great job as a fill in for Nero. A lot of the action was pretty thrilling, especially the scene where Garcia robs the stagecoach. Alot of plot twists and turns that were a little hard to keep track of, almost like a film noir. I’m gonna have to watch this one again to get a better feel for it but it’s definitely a 4 star SW for me upon first viewing. Nice music too.

Sometimes I’m still surprised how different films can be experiencded. For me the stagecoach robbery was a lousy scene.

Django, Prepare a Coffin will be released on Blu-ray by Arrow on June 3[sup]rd[/sup]:

In my opinion the scene is neither good nor bad…

On the other hand I like the ford sequence, in which Garcia plays a protagonistic role again.

According to Arrow, the ArrowDrome disc came from an SD master. The Cineteca di Bologna restored the film after their release so Arrow decided to do a Blu-ray.
