Hi there. Old time SW fan, new to the forum. I’m looking for a film I remember watching with my dad in the early 80s. My memory is fuzzy but this is what I remember. The protagonist is an army deserter or an escaped POW who is being chased by members of the army through the desert. It’s very bleak and survivalist. I remember him eating bugs to survive. At the end he gets shot and killed by his pursuers within sight of a fort and salvation. Brutal ending ala The Great Silence. I recently watched The Naked Prey and it definitely has the same look and fell. Just replace the African Veldt with the Almerian Desert, make it a Western and give it that punch in the gut ending. Does this film exist or has my 40 year old memory bastardised The Naked Prey into an SW? ![]()
Some aspects of the film you describe are reminiscent of, ‘Charley One-Eye’ (1973)
Thank you for your suggestion, Aldo. I don’t remember the protagonist being black, but it does look promising. I’ll watch it this weekend and let you know. Regards, Jorge
Charley One Eye doesn’t have the ending described and the Rountree character is being pursued by a single bounty hunter. The Naked Prey is similar but Cornel Wilde is being chased by Africans rather than the army and the end is not as you describe.
Thank you.
I found a reddit post of someone looking for the same film. It reminded me of a very important element. When he is killed at the end, it’s by the soldiers at the fort. In other words, friendly fire. They kill him by mistake. here’s another memory on the post: He either fell into or was dragged through a bunch of cacti … seems like he was blonde … a cavalry soldier … last survivor of an Indian attack, maybe?
I found it. Unfortunately the consensus is that it is one of the worst westerns ever made. Apache Blood(1973)
It is indeed one of the worst, if not the worst!
