The Living Coffin (1958/Fernando Méndez)

I just recently purchased the Casa Negra DVD of this early Mexican western/horror/comedy/drama which is quite a unique movie within the western as well as the horror genre.

The movie is clearly inspired by some of the US western of the 50’s but mixes the whole thing up with a good amount of gothic horror and of course the usual greek tragedy elements. There are even some comical elements to be found, provided by the hero’s sidekick, which do feel a bit akward at times. Curiously enough it was shot in color which wasn’t usual for Mexican low budget movies of that time.

I hope i get the chance to view the DVD this weekend since i’m rather interested to see how this mish mash of genres turns out. But maybe some other board member would like to share their thoughts about this rather unique mexican western?
