The Last Western You Watched?

Fair call. Ford was a master.

Oh boy…this is going to get me into trouble! Heh heh heh!
I left Ford off that list intentionally.
Yes, Ford was a master; but, I find his movies fairly boring. I love MY DARLING CLEMENTINE, though. I think that is one of the greatest Westerns of all time. And THE SEARCHERS has its moments, as well. But, Ford’s movies–great as they may be–have never really struck a heavy chord with me.

Last year, I was chatting with LQ Jones about Budd Boetticher (with whom he worked on BUCHANAN RIDES ALONE) and I said, “You know, I would rather watch a Budd Boetticher movie than a John Ford picture any day of the week”!
LQ looked at me for a moment as if I were insane, then said as if dumbfounded, “Well…I wouldn’t go that far…”.

I am most likely crazy, but I just can’t get behind Ford’s movies much.
I understand why he is important and I understand why folks think so highly of him; but, he just doesn’t do all that much for me.

Anthony Mann made great westerns. In my opinion “Winchester '73” is his best film.

Back on topic, todays movie:

“Sabata”
-Lee Van Cleef

Great spaghetti western

Return of Sabata - pretty good. I missed Banjo, but it’s a fine movie.

FAFDM 100th time - still one of the best. "This train WILL stop at Tucumcari."
And Indio… melts

I hear you on that one. Van Cleef is always cool, but i loved Banjo. I think that in the hands of some other actors, that role could have been disastrous, but William Berger was such a great, expressive actor…one of my favourites in and outside of the SW genre.
I really enjoyed it, a lot of people don’t like Peter Lee Lawrence (or Giuliano Gemma for that matter) because they think he is too pretty for the roles but i have enjoyed the westerns he has been in.

So, is this really a Euro Western (opposed to spaghetti, although it is spaghetti enough for my liking  because i always see that the original title is the Spanish title not the Italian one.
I always find this view quite funny. I guess he could be described as pretty, though i always thought he looked quite cold a lot of the time, making him quite effective in villainous roles, which he played quite a few of, in several genres. Anyway…if you rely mainly on your gun, you don’t exactly need to be a big rugged guy. The again, i guess i’m pretty biased on this subject… :stuck_out_tongue:

“Face Of A Fugitive” (1959)
-Fred MacMurray

A man on the run wanders into a new town, changes his name, falls in love with the Sheriffs sister and ends up being one of the good guys.

Solid well acted film. Plenty of action and a good story

Django…now, again, I can’t get that song out of my head!!!

Che c’entriamo noi con la rivoluzione? aka What Am I Doing in the Middle of the Revolution. Corbucci’s often neglected spaghetti western revolution movie. And one sees why. This is a comedy sort of, but unlike Compañeros it never really takes off. A damn shame as it could have been a great movie. Morricone’s wonderful music also isn’t utilized as well as in Corbucci’s other movies which is another damn shame.

A movie of missed opportunities. Worth a go but definitely nothing special.

…and continuing with Corbucci, watched The Great Silence tonight.

I think the wife has had it with SWs for a while !!!

Haha. I watched from Dusk Till Dawn 3 a couple of days ago. And since the first half is a western I’m allowed to post it here :P.

The Hangman’s Daughter 7/10

Did you watch it for Michael Parks?

Silver Saddle.
This was a pleasant surprise for me. I didn’t like the whole kid subplot, but all the other things were great. Maybe music might have been better, but overall definitely recommended.

The music grows on you. I more or less hated the music and especially the title song. After having acquired the soundtrack and listened to it a couple of times I must say that that is prime stuff. Didn’t like the movie particular much though.

I am pretty much with alk0 on SILVER SADDLE (which by coincidence, I rewatched earlier today!). A lot of it was good…but, that subplot with the kid almost killed it off.
Still, I found it enjoyable.

As for the music…hmmm…well…I could never really get into it. There are a couple of interesting cues on that soundtrack CD, but the main theme sort of gets on my nerves, after awhile.

i don’t mind the song myself, i think it’s quite catchy

‘Get mean!’

 • pretty weird, strange movie starring Tony Anthony
 • confusing
 • really not that special
 • has its (very few) moments

Does anybody know it ?

“The Man From Laramie”

James Stewart classic

No wonder you sold the soundtrack to me then

‘Why go on killing ?’ (Perchè uccidi ancora ?)

 • good average stuff starring Anthony Steffen
 • hard revenge story
 • some nice duels and shootings
 • alright score
