i don’t like the very end from this one looks soo poor

Boldest Job In The West
i had a good time with this one, i liked both parts, muddy first half of the movie in a town, and second snowy half in woods
great work with explosives, dynamite scenes are spectacular and there“s plenty of them (unlike Dinamita Jim)
Stelvio Cipriani did a good job, but i think he“s score is only half as good as in some his other movies
for me it was every minute fun this flick, although some of the subplot were little underdeveloped (those two women of Charly Bravo, what was that all about)
also maybe if someone starts to examine the story (mainly in second half), he could find some logic holes, but what the hell…

CompaƱeros (1970, Corbucci)

Been working on my review of the movie. It’s one of those spaghs that definitely get better with multiple viewings. I’ve probably seen it more often than any other (non-Leone) spagh, and I’m already looking forward to the next time. Favorite moment is still the death of professor Xanthos and the announcement, by one of the boys, that the Federales are coming, in large numbers

Watched it in Italian this time (a copy from the R1 disc); it’s a very verbose movie, and had some trouble to understand what was being said in a couple of scenes. The copy wasn’t 1:1, but even the compressed image was much better than on my German Starlight DVD (which is a mediocre release)

And His Name Was Holy Ghost.

Vassili Karis stars as Holy Ghost, one of the three Holy Ghost films he made. Out of prison he is soon planning a gold robbery with the help of a man who helped him evade the sheriff. Dick Palmer plays the Indian Sheriff, and is a site to be seen. Holy Ghost is not one of those 100% type bad guys, he gives you a chance before killing you. Not sure what it is re Karis but can still see a little boy in part of his facial expressions at times. Did not recognise Hunt Powers with his huge moustache. Whole lot different than the Garko Holy Ghost film, this one plays it straight. Not a top tier western, but enjoyable enough for this viewer.

You still think that the ending is pessimistic?

Yes, in the sense that they will all die, and that the revolution is destined to fail; but their victory lies in defeat, in keeping up your dignity in the face of death. That’s what this film is about.

I planned to write a longer article on Corbucci’s political westerns, so I’m currently rewatching them, watching a few non-westerns he did (in the period he made his Zapatas), reading as much about the man and his work as possible, collection info. He’s still an underrated director, probably because his films are so lively, and often funny. Comedy is an underrated genre, many critics think comedy is by definition less interesting, less profound than drama. This is not true.

I still think they won’t die, and that nothing in the film indicates that they could die.

Must be an ambivalent film …

BANDIDOS 1967
a very great SW!!! good action and the best role for enrico maria solerno
the main character looks a lot like the philip law, i also like the bad villain
i had seen the vhs casette from greece before 15 years which was very badly cut

Obviously the question will remain unanswered, but from the point of view of the forces involved the situation is rather unbalanced, so scherpschutter’s interpretation has its own legitimacy.

The final shoot-out/battle was also extremely unbalanced. No problem for the Swede.
The directing of the final scene, the expressions on the faces of Milian and Berben, and of course Nero is shouting vamos a matar (not let’s die). This all looks like all problems solved with Yod’s return.

from my planned Gemma marathon, i watched only Adios Gringo by Stegani
i remember seeing it on VHS years ago as one of the very first nonLeone westerns
i didn’t like it thereat, now i like it little more, good music by Ghiglia (even great maybe), some interesting camera movements
and second shootout between Gemma and three men is just superb - dynamic, quick and harsh looking and with lot of ignited gunpowder
story is not very interesting to me, but at least fistfights were done well

in the final showdown Gemma faces at least 15 men but he is short on ammo - he says: ā€œā€¦with each of these last six bullets, i’m gonna send six of them to hel!ā€ and cool music begins and Gemma goes and shoots six guys - and i say ā€œwhat the fuckā€. Things is, he has these dead guys lying on the ground everywhere and plenty of time to pick up some of their guns…
i donĀ“t know, but this Brent Landers … maybe it was that he falls in love suddenly with that blondie girl or something

With rifle and gun, Brent was convinced to have some extra shot (in the original version he does not know the exact number of bullets at his disposal).

Regarding your planned ā€œmarathonā€, would not it be more interesting to take the opportunity to watch the movies in chronological order?

Tall in the Saddle

A quite enjoyable early John Wayner. Story and directing are nothing special, and Wayne had yet to become an actor (but is adequate), but it has a refreshing drive and a strong female lead played by Ella Raines.
So far the best Wayne Western between Stagecoach and Fort Apache. Well, that one and The Spoilers, which was a bit different from the rest. 6/10

aha, good to know, but it could be more interesting if he could pick up those lying guns and goes on rampage
another weird thing in this scene was, when he came with his rifle and these badguys, they just popped up from behind rocks and Brent shot them like on shooting-gallery (why these guys didnĀ“t shoot from their hideout like they did it few minutes ago, well…)
i know, this way it was more interesting (but not very clever)

yes that would be interesting, but you know how it is - some of these flicks i“ve seen already, some of them i don“t have and some of them are prepared for the marathon
i could wait until i would have all of them, but it could take a long time …
or did you mean only these three movies? in that case, i don“t bother

Yes, I was referring only to the three titles planned in your marathon.

10.000 Dollars for a Massacre, just has good as Vengeance Is Mine, but for different reasons. The character relationships and the attention to details truly elevate the film to the rank of greatness. So many scenes stuck in my head. And a strong female character like Mijanou (beautiful name, by the way) is always a welcome addition.

Please Koch Media, re-release the two films, I want them in my collection so bad!

Yes, they need a re-release. I have the Spanish Suevia discs, which are far from great (Vengeance is Mine is okay, but 10.000 is particularly poor)
I bought these discs instead of the box because the box was so expensive, but I’d be the first to buy a reasonably priced re-release
