Took a trip on memory lane today, and watched George Stevens “Shane”. this one was one of the great classic westerns that I alwayss liked, and i still think that Jack Palance almost steals the show, and in a way Allan Ladd character and also Palance for that matter were a big influence for SW characters .
It was so much in TV a few years ago that this onemust be western that I saw the most (also got an VHS tape).
…You’re a god damn Yankee liar…
Bend of the River - Anthony Mann (1952)
Very good western with fascinating acting by Stewart and Kennedy. Mostly shot outdoors which adds a lot to the atmosphere.
Che c’entriamo noi con la Rivoluzione (1973, Sergio Corbucci)
Odd combination of some very good scenes and a lot of inappropriate comedy (mostly verbal), with two charactors (and actors) who don’t belong in a Zapata western.
I saw a fandubbed version and it’s quite possible that the film works better in its original version; I found a 7 minutes clip on You Tube in Italian that sounded far more sharp-witted than in the dubbed version I saw. The film probably is too verbose - and the verbosity too typically Italian - to be dubbed successfully.
Not a complete failure, but the mid-section of the movie is hard to sit through
The Big Sky - Howard Hawks (1952)
Essential and pure Hawks. For the first time in the 142 min version.
This one now has unfortunately a lot of studio shots. Despite looking quite good, this film would have benefited from a complete outdoor shot. Apart from that great entertainment and a beautiful dancing and drinking scene with Kirk Douglas.
Hawks wasn’t satisfied with Douglas doing some method acting tricks, but he is in fact very good, and I don’t think that Hawks’ original choice John Wayne would have been better. Arthur Hunnicut is excellent as an old and wise trapper.
Ben and Charlie. Watched it last night, showed it to a friend, he didn’t even catch the fact it was spaghetti.
Great movie. If I go north, you go south!
Blue (Narizanno, 1968)
Watched Sabata last night. You can never go wrong with ole’ Van Cleef.
LONG DAYS OF VENGEANCE, the short(est) version. Holy hell, another boring Gemma flick.

Watch Ben and Charlie, that’s a great Gemma flick.
Bullets Don’t Argue - Wartched the new Koch dvd.

Too bad you didn’t like it as much as I did, but I can see where you’re coming from, the humour is definitively inappropriate (though like I said, I thought it made an effective contrast). In retrospect, my comment about the film seems a little too positive, it does drag in a couple of places. And I though the dub was pretty good, but you’re right, it’s probably much better in Italian and I’d be overjoyed if someone released a quality DVD of it with the original audio track (sadly, I guess chances of that are slim).
Watched bringing up baby, some how this pos is still funny
WANTED, ADIOS GRINGO, ALIVE OR PREFERABLY DEAD, SILVER SADDLE, FORT YUMA GOLD, A SKY FULL OF STARS FOR A ROOF were boring enough for my likes.
@Hoover Valentine: I’ve seen BEN AND CHARLIE and while I wouldn’t call it a ‘great’ SW, I enjoyed it quite a lot and thought it was far better than the films I mentioned above.
I just watched “Il bianco, il giallo, il nero”. This is an awful Gemma-flick!

You’d probably like Arizona Colt better, it’s a bit of a ‘dirtier’ Gemma.
Gemma Millian and Wallach. Don’t blame only the poor Italian ;D
I’m reading some comments on the movie now (Giusti, Giré, some comments on the net) and the film seems to devide people. I somehow find the idea behind the movie - two people thrown in a historic event, the Mexican revolution, they don’t care about (that’s also what the Italian title says) - more interesting than its execution. There are a few other witty ideas, but all in all it can’t hold a candle to Corbucci’s other Zapata’s.
No, I blame the poor Italian: Corbucci!
Is this the same director, who did so many great westerns??? Pathetic!
