The Last Western You Watched?

THE MERCENARY

I watched the Koch media DVD of A BARREL FULL OF DOLLARS and I found it extremely boring.

Just viewed the documentary on the Koch disc to The Mercenary which I enjoyed.

Did you liked the UFO Story?
It always good to listen to Franco Nero.

Did you enjoy it then?

Sure did  .

Viewed Custer of The West.

Big epic 60’s western about various battles General Custer (Robert Shaw) and his men had with the Indians.

Not viewed a film based on true events for a while where so many people get killed…what a waste. Would never have liked to had an argument with Shaw as he usually scares me a little. The score was a bit harsh on my poor little ears most of the time. Liked this man made water slide which carried tree trunks to the water below, and cannot remember seeing one like that in a western before.

El Puro (Eduardo Mulgaria)

Watched this one Autephex’s uncut project. Like he points out in his notes, the cut scenes are not of any major importance. For me, they added a sense of completion to the film. Though I like it all the same. I hope to publish a review at FoP.

The True Story of Jesse James - Nicolas Ray

Ray started to make the JJ story more psychological but had in the end to skip his Citizen Kane like structure for a chronological order, even if the film still has flashback structure and starts with the Northfield, Minnesota raid.
Interestingly they used stock material for some spectacular scenes from the 1939 JJ claasic by Henry King.
Like in all JJ films there are the great looking dusters and there is Django mud in the streets in the beginning.

Good film with some beautiful looking shots, but too talkative, and maybe even in a director’s cut not as complex as intended. Robert Wagner is a good JJ, but Jeffrey Hunter is a weak Frank James.

I prefer the 39 version.

Roberto Bianchi Montero: Durango is coming, pay or die!http://www.spaghetti-western.net/index.php/Arriva_Durango,_paga_o_muori (dvd-r)
-Rough faces muscleman Brad Harris stars as Durango and Jose Torres in very Tuco-like role in this little b-western. Familiar Lallo Gori score from many Fidani’s is recycled again.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Bob Ford

Finally.

Hardly ever seen such a selfindulgent movie. Reminded me of a Terence Malick movie, but Malick is a Heideggerian lunatic and I like to watch a Malick movie every five years or so. But this looks more like a photoshoot of more then seven hours. Not one scene seems to move. Sure, it looks good, the director studied the works of Rembrandt and Vermeer very well plus some early impressionist works (especially Monet’s rural paintings). I can’t remember a film that tries so hard to be artistic. It’s all clair obscur, clouds, dust, steam, cornfields and dazzling sunlight. I was afraid Jesse would cut of an ear in the end, but luckily Bob got him first.

The actors do remarkably well. Pitt is good and Affleck is even better. Along with some sparse violent moments (which are excellent) they save the movie more or less.

I hope next time this Dominik makes a film in a genre I don’t like

Brescia: Colt is my Lawhttp://www.spaghetti-western.net/index.php/Ley_del_Colt,_La
Zorro-style western where selfish dandy “surprisingly” turns out to be gunfighter hero. Nothing really memorable in this one.

I have just watched The Price of Power (Il Prezzo del potere) by Tonioni Valeri.

The president of the USA takes a train from Washington to Dallas (Texas) without beeing escorted by any soldiers.
The reason for his journey is to “talk to the people”. Some 20 folks welcome him at the train station.
I would say the plot isn’t very authentic and the film containes too much dialogue. The film was very dissapointing indeed. I actually can’t believe that the masterpiece “My Name is Nobody” is made by the same director.

Exactly my point. And this was his best directed, which does not mean that it was anything special.

Of course Nobody is in fact … (you’ll guess it)

Bava: Ringo from Nebraskahttp://www.spaghetti-western.net/index.php/Ringo_del_Nebraska (dvd)
-quite good film from Bava, at least there’s some bright colours and some good photographt in Bava style. Piero Lulli provides another good villain role.

Do you mean, apart from Nobody, “The Price of Power” is his best movie?
Why have I wasted $15 for a DVDR of “Day of Anger” then >:(
After “The Price of Power” I felt the strong desire to watch “Kill Them all and come back alone” right away, cos after all this politics there must be some action. ;D

I think he means to say that Nobody was directed by Leone, many people (starting with Frayling) have suggested this; I think too that at least large parts of Nobody betray the hand of the master

The Price of Power is just okay. It’s not bad, it’s well-crafted, but if you’re not into this type of westerns with political overtones, it probably won’t hold you attention all along the ride.

Day of Anger is a fine movie, don’t worry, the point is that Stanton doesn’t like it, but he represents a minority standpoint here, it’s in many people’s Top 20

It was actually one of the worst, I don’t like the style of the movie and its main actor neither.
On Top of that, the Best DVD was, as expected, desastrous. But I think the worst thing of the movie was the plot itsself. If it had been about a deputy Gouvernour of Oklahoma who arrives in Dallas, I would have come to terms with the plot, but the president of the united states??? No Way!!! Maybee someone has to redubb it into my plot with the deputy Gouvernour

Yes, I think that Nobody is mainly a Leone film, but directed mostly by Valerii.

Apart from Nobody Day of Anger is Valerii’s best, but it lacks the necessary style to be more than a good film. So I like it, but not more than other 6/10 films, which is by the way also my rating for Price of Power.

We had talked about these things in the film’s threads.

El santo, say, you have mentioned the Best DVD, but you had at least watched the DVD with the long version. In the short German version the film sucks.
Best had released 2 DVDs, but strangely in the long version 1-2 min are missing, which are already in the short version. So both are cut.

Sure they messed up the whole political thing
here’s a review by an American who knows his history:
