The 2nd half of El Dorado is obviously a close variation of Rio Bravo, but yes, it has enough of its own qualities.
I rewatched both last year, and while I said before that both are equally good, I think now that Rio Bravo is really better, does really deserve to be called one of the best westerns ever. I never enjoyed Rio Bravo as much as last year. Some minor flaws are still there, but it is Hawks masterpiece, the essence of his way of filmmaking.
Rio Bravo is probably my favourite US western, followed by The Wild Bunch.
The Wild Bunch is together with OuTW my favourite western, and both are together with 2001 and Eight and a Half my favourite movies.
But Rio Bravo made after that last viewing a big step forward, and is now I think one of the top 20. Another film which I enjoyed recently more than ever, is Fordās Wagonmaster. Probably a 10/10, and that would be then Fordās only 10er for me. It is Fordās most poetic work and the clearest expression of his usual themes, the contrast between desert and paradise, between civilisation and barbarism.
I also enjoyed The Searchers and My Darling Clementine more than ever, and while MDC comes close to Wagonmaster, I still have some problems with The Searchers, thereās still too much stuff which feels āwrongā to me. But it is easy to see why so many adore this one.
Love it

Probably my favourite Ford.

Love it.
The Wild Bunch is one of my favorite westerns as well, but whatās āOuTW?ā
The very last is OGNUNO PER SE (the Ruthless Four). Absolutely fantastic (Mr. Kinskiās is BIONDO, like Eastwood in GBU! and Mr. Rustichelliās music in the wind is gorgeous).
Few days before I rewatched MAJOR DUNDEE. I always imagine what it would have been with Mr. Fielding instead of Mr. Amfitheatrofās (very good) music.
Once Upon a Time in the West (Leone, 1968)
HAH, shouldāve guessed it! Yeah, those are arguably two of the greatest films in the western genre.
Hah, very good ā¦

Deaf Smith and Johnny Ears is a brilliant film! No idea why it isnāt on Blu-ray yet!
'Deaf Smith/Johnny Ears is crying out for a bluray releaseā¦the interaction between the two stars is beautiful to behold.
Iāve only seen it once, and that was a crappy copy on āYoutubeāā¦but I loved itā¦
Just watched A Man Called Gannon (1968). Not much to offer people who like action but I was in a good enough mood to enjoy it. I canāt say itās one Iād watch on repeat though.

Iāve only seen it once, and that was a crappy copy on āYoutubeāā¦but I loved itā¦
There is a decent widescreen copy recorded from TV that exists but I have only watched a full screen VHS rip myself. I think Iāve tried to work it into my alternative top 20 in the past but it seems to slip out - more to do with the fact that thereās so many enjoyable spaghettis.
I have yet to see that one
Its on my āTo Watchā list, but seems it never makes it to the top
Comes a Horseman. Kind of a neo-western. Decent visuals and characters, but terrible screenplay
Iāve watched this western. I canāt buy Jane Fonda falling in love with James Caan. In my opinion heās not a good looking guy.

Since when did women really care about that?
