The Last Western You Watched? ver.2.0

I would rate them higher, if they didn’t bored the hell out of me.

I had JJ in my Top 20 US Westerns, but on the recent rewatch, I had to admit, it is kind of about nothing.

Still very much on my own “to watch” list. In fact I’m still woefully ignorant when it comes to that whole Hollywood “golden age” of westerns from Stagecoach and its contemporaries through the forties and fifties and right into the early sixties I guess. Seen far too few of those. Thing is, I’ve a bit of an aversion to overwrought love interests, women swooning all around John bloody Wayne, and guitar-swinging troubadours bursting into song every ten minutes; all traits which happen in every single one of those movies without exception. Definitely.

I don’t have much time for schmaltzy American westerns of this period, but ‘Stagecoach’ is definitely a cut above. Very entertaining

Hostiles (2017) - I was considering 0% rating for this movie at first, but there are some beautiful landscape shots. I would nominate Bale for Golden raspberry award. 20%

LOL … I can’t take him seriously either ! He strikes me in almost every movie I’ve seen him in, as a desperate De Niro, Brando wannabe … and those guys are overrated too. Yeah we all are aware of the classics, but De Niro has been in more junk movies than Richard Harrison ! “Shame on you … shame on you, shame …. !”

Well, I like him in most of his movies, but this performance could be summarized into: “Look how cool beard I’ve grown and what I can do with it as an actor”. Not to mention, that I could barely understand what he is mumbling half of the time - or better said, what the actors are mumbling, lot of them have a beardo.

Just watched Once upon a time in the West yesterday. My God I could see why Sergio Leone is highly acclaimed in the western genre. The movie is now one of my all time favorites.

Ride in the Whirlwind… One needs to set his mind for a very slow paced realistic survival western with almost no dialogue otherwise you’ll get bored rather easily.

Yes, great landscape shots. If the actors wouldn’t have gotten in the way, it would have been a very beautiful film indeed

Barquero. Not bad, first time I have seen it.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was great. A pretty good twilight western.

Tombstone was amazing. The action, the characters, and the dialogue are just phenomenal.

True Grit (1969) I posted about this one and was pretty let down by it. Hope to give it a second watch.

The Legend of Jake Kincaid/Forgiven Just awful. A faith based western that is 1.5 hours long yet drags for eternity because how bad it is.

I noticed a lot of people just calling this a Bonnie & Clyde rip-off, but I enjoy Butch & Sundance much more.

Now I have not seen Bonnie and Clyde but dont tell me there is a guy with who Bonnie and Clyde share in a bed and ride a bike with him. xD

Just saw Navajo Joe. Loved the movie and the character but didn’t really like Burt. He looked too annoying.

Just saw BLOOD AT SUNDOWN and THE MOMENT TO KILL back to back.

Moment to Kill I will give a 6/10, a flick slightly above average. Some strong scenes and shoot-outs (the one in the slaughterhouse towards the end being the best) makes it whorth watching but overall the story and plot is too much of routine, wich sometimes can work if the acting and cinematography is strong, but in my opinion it is not in this one. Alot of the scenes were made in the dark and indoors wich to me looks uninspired. George Hilton portrays some kind of a Django/Ringo character without any further depth. I think Carnimeo wanted to create a Spencer/Hill duo of Hilton and his sidekick but kind of fails with that in my opinion.

Blood at Sundown on the other hand will recieve a strong 7.5/10. Anthony Steffen portrays a man framed for a murder he didn’t commit who comes out of jail to bring the people behind this to justice, the psychopathic villain to a brother played by Gianno Garko being one of them - SARTANA (Not the one we know him from). While Steffen gives his usual wooden acting Garko really steals the show here. Diamond rings, blonde shiny hair and a evil grin on his face, he makes one wan’t to see him dead more and more as the plot and story unfolds to it’s final climax. There’s some really fine shots and locations and it kept me interested all the way through. One too many lousy fist fights with Steffen swinging like a jackass, but I can overlook that in this movie. Must see for Garko fans, definatly!
