The Last Movie You Watched?

ROBIN HOOD (2010, Ridley Scott)

A minor, but still enjoyable Scott spectacle. Scott and Crowe are re-united, but the movie is closer to Kingdom of Heaven than to Gladiator.

I watched the Director’s Cut, which is 16 minutes longer than the theatrical version (criticized for being hopelessly confusing). I haven’t seen the film in cinema but apparently the longer version solved a few continuity problems; it still suffers from too many characters and locations (we hop from France to England and from Nottingham to the Coast and back) but I had no trouble following the story.

Russell Crowe is Robin Longstride, an archer who eventually becomes Robin of the Hood after he has helped the greedy King John fight off the French. He is declared an outlaw by the ungrateful monarch on the charge of impersonating a knight. Crowe is quite good and so is Cate Blanchett as Lady Marion, but characterizations seem to be written in shorthand and it all feels very superficial.

The film goes on too long, with a lengthy (and rather chaotic) build-up to the final battle on the beach (which is almost filmed as a D-Day avant la lettre). But don’t worry: medieval England has never looked better and Scott sure knows how the visualize those large-scale battle scenes.

that’s Normandy and RB and his companions who traversed time … and space

Emanuelle’s Revenge ( 1975 ).

Woman kills herself after being tormented by George Eastman. Enter the womans sister who develops a plan to capture and torment Eastman. Low key film, and Eastman really shows the frustration of being tormented. Another effective sleazy one by director Joe D’ Amato.

having a little rest from spaghies, i stepped back into postapo and sf fields and …

watched Tank Girl - a PA based on a cult comics of which i’d read some stories but never got fully into it
well, this movie has some bad reputation and guess what, it’s not a miracle at all, but a watchable effort with great start, lot of cheesy villains with Malcolm McDowell in lead, some good action and top notch tank vs. huge truck chase peppered with lot of funny ideas, kangaroo mutants who jumps everywhere like motherfuckers and thanks to crisp and clean bluray edition we can see the strings attached to their backs while happily jumping around - great, bluray’s a bitch
okay

next one was Android - sf from 82 with our man Klaus Kinski, actually i thought this is going to be cheap ultracrap affair, but found myself engaged by the story quite quickly - not really a classic but entertaining and thrilling enough to watch to the interesting finale
btw, some special effects looked very familiar to me and then i remembered that these were reused in Critters 3, those poor sods

Haven’t yet seen this Emanuelle and I think I’m overdue for a D’Amato Sleazer :stuck_out_tongue:

Look forward to your thoughts  . It was the first time I seen the uncut version.

Invictus 2009 Clint Eastwood

I’ve just notice it was one of the rare Eastwood directed films. I haven’t seen yet. So got the DVD, and it was an actual watch after all.
Not the best film directed by Eastwood but a very professional. The story is well known and we all know how it ends, the characters don’t have any depth, and that’s not what it matters.
Matt Damon a very professional actor fits perfectly for this type of story, he really looks like a professional rugby player, It’s a feel good movie where the clichés look normal. technically its a great film a real compendium, the scenes of the games are very well done.
So a good story to tell, transported to the screen in a very professional way and that its just enough.

Haven’t watched Invictus yet, and not likely to do so in the very near future, I’m a bit fed up with Nelson Mandela acting in Eastwood’s movies as if he were Morgan Freeman all the time. It started with Unforgiven and it seems to go on forever and ever …

Byzantium(2013) Neil Jordan Enjoyed–Decent vampire film with a unique and original story witch is well directed, with good acting and a decent soundtrack. But, let me tell you,…it is also very slow-paced. Freshly made coffee made me stay with it though!

Memories of Murder(2003) Joon-Ho Bong Enjoyed–Very good South Korean thriller film that was well executed I thought.

The Falling Man(1969) with Henry Silva Enjoyed–Vengeance is the name of the game in this flick, with an intense Henry Silva who is always good for a watch IMO.

7 Hours of Violence(1973) with George Hilton Mildly Enjoyed–Eh…Average Euro action thriller with George Hilton doing his best as a karate expert and ex-assassin in this rather somewhat semi-entertaining flick.

Riddick(2013) with Vin Diesel Did not enjoyed this lack-luster boring sci-fi flick. PITCH BLACK was better IMO.

watched a postapo sf australian flick i’ve never ever heard of - The Starship aka Lorca (1984)
well, imdb rating 3,2 is little unfair, because there’s some shiny material in it like for instance Hugh Keyas-Byrne driving a huge truck (and i mean really huge) in mad max style
okay, far from called it hidden gem, but i’m glad i’ve familiarized myself with this

viewed another postapo, this time Finnish! - Last Border (1992) with Jurgen Prochnow as the main baddie leading a vicious biker gang in a scandinavian wasteland
wow
okay, film is visually quite interesting, but that’s about it - it was so boring i thought it’ll never end
the finale is quite SW driven with a duel and even some trumpets playing in a backround, but really this was so bad and so cliched without any original idea …
i don’t know …
i guess, i have to wait a little more time a then watch Snowpiercer, which is probably the best PA of last few years

Two PA turkeys (yes, the first one was a failure too, but you fail to admit it; that’s all) and then you’re planning to watch a third …

Some guys never learn …

2 Guns (2013).

Action film about two agents from different departments who try to break a drug ring, but things do not go so smooth. And the two agents at first do not know each one is an agent, which is interesting. One of those films that looks like it was made earlier than it was at times. The dress sense, some of the older style American cars and low key locations. Entertaining enough with some ok action and contrasting acting styles by the two leads.

Scorchy (1976) - Some good action scenes, but sort of ruined with Connie Stevens in the lead role… don’t think i’ve ever seen a less convincing detective/action star

I’ve not seen it but people have complained (and some boycotted the release) because it’s a cut TV version (or something like that). I bought the set anyway, end of the day for the cost of it I’d have been happy to buy Trackdown alone for the same price.

Watched Trackdown the other day. Enjoyed it alot. Suprised I had not heard of the film before or viewed it before :stuck_out_tongue: .

Starship Troopers: Invasion (2012) by Shinji Aramaki
Better than the first two “sequels”, but aside from the pretty visuals it doesn’t have much going on for it. Is it so hard to make a good Starship Troopers film?
Watched Trackdown the other day. Enjoyed it alot. I watched it the other day too.

Grand Slam
-Good heist film with great cast including Klaus Kinski, Edward G Robinson and Janet Leigh.

Hanussen
-Last film in the trilogy by Szabo and Brandauer. Film is based on a real life clairvoyant who lived in Germany during the rise of the nazis but weirdly film takes really different approach than what is written about him in the wikipedia for example.
