The Last Movie You Watched?

Well I’m a great Peckinpah admirer, sure he got some more weak films , but Bring me the head of Alfredo Garcia ain’t one of those, for me its a great film among his best, for once we got Oates performace which is brilliant, the film ain’t about Garcia its about Benny (Oates) the eternal looser, and we see him loosing everything, the way Peckinpah films Benny’s quest in B grade style is just made to fool and confuse the viewer, so hidden above the surface of a Mexican western we got an epic quest of a men that looses everything even his love (Isela vega).
Among my favourite Peckinph’s and one of my top movies for sure, not an easy film yes but a great one.

I watched Pulp last night, which wasn’t half bad. It’s a bit of a hidden gem, but Michael Caine definitely carries the film, as he has so many others. Some of the writing was very good and I liked the film’s style.

Cherry Tree Lane. pretty boring.

For your Eyes only (Scott Glenn, 1981)*

I remember that I liked the movie when I saw it for the first time, it was at least a step up from the nonsense of Moonraker, but thrirty years (and tough Bonds with Timothy Dalton and Daniel Craig) later, this looks like one more of those silly Bond adventures with Roger Moore.
Moore is actually not that bad, but he has very little to do: it’s all up to his stunt doubles.

Could have been a good movie: the story is more than acceptable but director Glenn keeps coming up with action scenes, some great, some so so, some pretty awful (the scene with the three ice hockey players may serve a reference here).

Some good stunts and locations and a truly intriguing Bond girl, Carole Bouquet.
Don’t know if everybody ever came up with this, but I had the strange feeling she was chosen because she has ‘Lee van Cleef eyes’. Furthermore she must witness how her parents are slaughtered and subsequently becomes an avenger. Spaghetti elements in a Bond movie?

Who knows.

* John Glen

Payday ( 1973 ).

Rip Torn plays a country and western singer on the road. Not about the singing, which is a relief as not a fan of this type of music really. About his seedy existence, whether it be where he next his drugs from or his next woman. Not a likeable character, but this character study is so down to earth that it does keep you watching.

One thing I did notice that I didn’t before is that Jack Hedley the cop from New York Ripper is in it.

Not that out of character. Moore did such things before. At least in The Spy Who Loved Me. And killing unarmed people was already done in Dr. No by Bond.

For me Charles Dance was the biggest surprise appearance, in a very small role as a hitman. He’s very young here and I didn’t recognize him at first. Or better: I recognized the face, but didn’t realize it was him. I had to check the cast on IMDB and then said to myself: Oh yes, of course!
One of those actors who always makes an impression, however small his part may be

Or John Glen  .

This one has a disco type score in bits as I remember but not seen in years, has the score dated the film do you think ?

John Glen (Scott is the American actor) !

I liked the score, and especially the theme song by Sheena Easton. Normally I’m not into these types of scores, but in this particular case it works quite well.
hell of a much better? well, now i´m undecided :-, but i probably will watch it, and when Africa will be on the turn,
its quite possible i forgot about nuances of Safari express.
But quite possible is also “i fell asleep during the movie” scenario. ;D
i fell asleep

i watched Ghosts of Mars, well i enjoyed it more than i expected
but it is very unbalanced flick and you can apply that almost on evetything,
maybe except for actors - i forgot Statham and Pam Grier was in it
but it´s funny how Carpenter was trying to make Ice Cube the most cool guy on the planet
but he is no match for characters like Russell´s Snake Plissken - even if he has great name - Desolation Williams ;D

The title song is still beautiful, and when the theme is used as part of the score it also works. But there is also some terrible sounding 80s synthesizer stuff, especially bad in the ski chase.

Yeah, you don’t expect these type of scenes in the Moore Bonds.

I read that originally Blondie would write and perform the theme song, but then Bill Conti wrote this song and when the producers heard Sheena Easton perform it, they wanted it to be the theme song at all costs.
It is one of the very best Bond songs

Didn’t notice these synthesizer sounds during the ski chase, but early on in the movie there were a few awkward moments, but overall I’ve heard far worse

I watched Lucio Fulci’s Perversion Story earlier and really liked it. Well written and entertaining from start to finish. It’s also quite interesting as Fulci plays with different shots and directorial techniques, with varying success. There’s some trademark gratuitous nudity and some completely unnecessary gore. Just another enjoyable Fulci flick.

Rage (1995) - Pretty good for people who like dumb movies with non-stop action… its pretty hard to believe someone can miss shooting someone at close range so many times. The tanker truck chase is breathtaking, one of the best car chases ever.

“After.Life” weird, compelling little film, but with too many unanswered questions. Liam Neeson gives a creepy performance. 7/10

Tropa de Elite 2 - O Inimigo Agora é Outro/Elite Squad 2: The Enemy Within - (2010) José Padilha

It’s a much different film from the first one, for once the story is more complex, and it loses some of the straight edge feeling, it gains more characters and more subplots, becoming a more professional production (it owns nothing the usual big ones), but it doesn’t loose its authenticity, the only small drawback I see, is that it looses some focus in the middle of the film for moments it seems we are watching a documentary, while the first was always a brutal rollercoaster trip, but the more complexity is well balance with the message of the film, in the end if you think about it, making a very different film from the first one wit different ideas and objectives, and still maintaining a high quality standard can only be a great achievement in cinematographic terms.
It’s made with a clever flashback mode, one where we can guess what happened, but still are not really sure, to be honest things would turn out different from what at I was expecting. For a complete understanding of some parts of the film you have to fully know or at least have some knowledge of Brazilian society the importance of TV shows and other specific things, but the film deals with one problem that is becoming or already is the main one of most modern western societies which is the obscene quantities of money that politicians need to get elected, and the corruption that this necessary brings with it, we are not electing people to solve our problems but only to solve the problems of those who gave the money to get elected in the first place. In that aspect the film is like a punch in the face, even more if we know that even its fiction it’s based in real facts and characters (some of those politicians did exist).
The director Padilha at the beginning of the film jokes with those who accused him of making a right wind fascist film in the first one, when he was just pretending to show reality, he really takes the shit out from those critics .
This film had the same impact in Brazil or even more, as the US made productions about politics dark world had in the US during the 70’s, the first screening got stand ovations in the cinema from what I’ve heard.
The acting is pretty good Wagner Moura does have great performances in both films and even with all the subplots and more characters the director never really loses control of the film, when it starts to drag a bit by the mid section, soon things get up to normal again, and there’s still plenty action and violent scenes for those who like more of those things, also having a narrator helps you to comprehend more the complex story .
Not least important I for once can watch a film with all coursing done in Portuguese, “Caralh…” “Filho da P…” etc you should never says those things In Portugal or Brazil unless you’re in a football game.

So a more complex story, and a political agenda, but without any preaching at least a bad one, results in a very good film.
