The Last Movie You Watched?

They showed Scorsese films this week on tv, so I caught some I hadn’t seen…

After Hours
Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore
I Call First
Boxcar Bertha

Salt - I was surprised how good this was, can’t say much without giving it away. There are three versions of the film on the disc, Theatrical, Extended cut and Director’s cut. I didn’t know what one to watch out of Director’s and Extended so watched the Director’s cut.

Did you like it?

Total Western Eric Rochant (2000)

Enough working for today and with the girl’s nap I could actually watch a movie fully concentrated without invoices and tax declarations.
This one it’s pretty cool if you like violent films with lots of shooting and gangsters and dead guys all around, pretty cool stuff, mix with French juvenile delinquents, you got yourself a pretty nice movie to go along with a few beers and some salty appetizers

Samuel le Biham is one of the best French actors of the actuality, at least the most versatile one he got a real variety of characters in very different films, from dramatic roles to action ones, he gives a stellar performance here.
The plot is pretty simple, after a drug deal that goes wrong, a gangster has to hide from view in some rural reformative school for problematic kids, after his hide-out its find out, by the other bad guys (Armenian mafia it seemed) all hell brakes through.
It’s becoming pretty much a cliché talking about SW influence in any violent flick, but there’s not much way to escape that on this one, and even more with such a title, surely it wasn’t the intention of director. Biham’s character is pretty “spaghetisque”, sometimes he resembled me Trintignant, and the final showdown even with Glock’s and Uzi’s is pure SW.

Rochant is a good director not many films to show but good ones. Like I said nice film with lots of violence and action scenes, even the hardest juvenile delinquents lost their will to become gangsters after all the violence.

Like it 4 stars

Visioneers

Visioneer George Washington Winsterhammerman (Zach Galifianakis) lives a comfortable but monotonous life in this slightly futuristic black comedy. But when people start exploding from stress and George is showing early symptoms, he's forced to examine his life. Taking a look at his prestigious job, his sexless marriage and his resistance to life coaching, George reconsiders the philosophy of happiness through mindless activity.

I’m a big fan of Zach Galifianakis lately, after seeing his stand up. Netflix is full of bad reviews for this film, from people complaining its boring… but that’s precisely the nature of the story, and what brings out the greatness in it. Its full of hilarious moments, they just aren’t as obvious and in your face as most of the raunchy comedies these days. The role was perfect for Galifianakis in my opinion, and anyone who really gets his stand up should enjoy this one. Maybe it was just my profound relation to the story, but this was one of the best recent films I’ve seen lately. I couldn’t disagree more with reviewers stating the film is aimless… either they’ve never experienced a long term, soul-killing job, or they’re too dull to know it.

I finally watched ”The Proposition” and found it to be an interesting film, but nothing special.
Besides the cinematography nothing about it is really that impressive.
6/10.

This looks like an interesting one El Topo… may have to track down a copy.

Yes I think it worth the effort, and wont be difficult to track.
in any case choose the English subs (If you don’t know French that is), after so many years of Anglo-Saxonic wrinting and talking, my French is paying the toll these days, even more in recent films, with some words and expressions that I find it hard to understand.

Twilight Zone Movie … yeah the last segment is the only one worth watching, imo. I really can’t believe how bad Spielbergs segment is, the story just goes nowhere.

Another vid projector evening.

This time we choose The French Connection (9/10) which is Friedkin’s best film.

Followed by Paul Verhoeven’s trashy Flesh + Blood (7/10) in which Jennifer Jason Leigh shows nearly all she has.

I treated myself to Heavy Metal when I got home last night. The animation looks dated now, but it still has a certain charm. The music is just fantastic.

Not exactly a film, but I saw an episode of Blackadder II last night - funny as hell ;D.

The John Woo topic inspired me to watch Bullet In The Head. I’d forgotten most of everything about it, so it was easy to watch again. An epic, although in my opinion it lacks the seriousness of the Vietnam movies it’s clearly inspired by, like The Deer Hunter; for that reason it also lacks some impact in places, making up for that with pyrotechnics and big scenes involving lots of extras. A good film, and I do admire it’s ambition, but it’s not my favourite from John Woo.

MACHETE

After EL Mariachi, Desperado, Once Upon a Time in Mexico Robert Rodriguez directed the next Mexloitation Action Adventure. It’s nice to see Danny Trejo in the leading role as Machete. Maybe not as good as Rodriguez best movies Sin City or From Dusk till dawn but still very entertaining.

Probably already mentioned here somewhere, but I really enjoyed the spaghetti references in Machete.

Lt. Jackson was waging a personal war against the Mexicans (Major Jackson / Django)… there was even the scene where they gun down the Mexicans running away from them

Jessica Alba’s character named Sartana Rivera

Yes I also enjoyed the spaghetti references. I only watched the German Version in which someone said something similiar to God forgives, I don’t (In German of course).

Watched this one recently too. Nice movie to watch before X-mas.

What a coincidence, me too! Didn’t like it, Renny Harlin is no John McTiernan.

Fright Night Part 2.

The sister vampire from the main vampire of the first film wants her revenge for his death, so goes after the vampire hunters responsible. Fun film with some enjoyable special effects. Viewed this at the cinema when it came out as I remember.

I think Harlin is a better action director than McTiernan. And I belong to the few who prefer DH II to the first.
