The Last Movie You Watched? ver.2.0

@Dean No lie, I had a girlfriend about ten years ago who preferred Hawks version. I love that version too but I was shocked when she said that…especially since she wasn’t a classic film buff or something.

I still attribute Scarface to one of the reasons I got into film. I watched it when I was like 12 (maybe a bit too early :joy:) and I thought it was the coolest shit ever (which it still is to be fair)

Funny enough it’s just been revealed that Criterion will be releasing it!

Ah I remember that one! Watched it when I was on a big Peter Fonda kick, actually have it on DVD.

Finally finished off my journey through 1948 with…

The Bicycle Thieves (De Sica / 9/10)

This film just keeps getting better with every viewing for me. Still heartbreaking.
I am tough on marking a film once it gets to the 8 and above out of 10 zone but this one is very close to a 10 for me.

The film that started my fascination with Neorealism, and still probably my favourite one, followed by Shoeshine.

… and Sergio Leone is in it too … what’s not to love, as they say.

Would like to put out a glowing recomendation for the recent Radiance release of Tokijiro: Lone Yakuza. Gorgous film that both satisfied my lust for some awesome swordplay AND managed to tug on my heartstrings plenty!

It was time for a rewatch. Stalingrad.
I have the scandinavian 2-disc DVD that includes the 2003 documentary, which I have not seen yet.

I’ve been on an Abel Ferrara and Michael Cimino kick as of recent. ‘King of New York’ (1990) with Christopher Walken as a ‘reformed’ New York crime boss who goes Robin Hood is a a movie no less poweful than Ferrara’s ‘Bad Lieutenant’ (1992) or ‘Ms. 45’ (1981). It’s got a terrific cast, including Laurence Fishburne, David Caruso, Wesley Snipes, Victor Argo and Paul Calderon. I hadn’t seen Cimino’s ‘Year of the Dragon’ (1985) since approximately 1997. As a fan of Mickey Rourke it was a roller coaster ride to watch him play a frustrated NYC cop who is out to bring down the Triad bosses who rule Chinatown and import heroin into the country. As cop Stanley White, he must navigate the NYPD’s corrupt political relationship with Chinatown’s big bosses and his hands being tied by police bureaucrats. Though ‘The Deer Hunter’ (1978) is put on a pedestal as Cimino’s masterpiece, Year of the Dragon combines Cimino’s style of long first scenes for establishing the setting with explosive action scenes. I dare say that I like it more than Deer Hunter. But, that’s me.

I love who Mister Big ends up turning out to be at the end of the movie :joy:.

‘YOJIMBO’ (1961)

Brilliance…from the beginning to the end…I adore this film.

I’ve always felt it would make a great western if someone had the foresight to adapt it

Same as the seven samurai… I could imagine that work well transposed to Mexico with gunslingers for hire…

Hopefully someone scrapes together a fistful of dollars to make that happen someday.

You might be onto something there

The Last Man on Earth (1964)

Good film. You could really feel the loneliness, sadness and hopelessness of the last survivor. The ending was depressing. My man Robert deserved better
I thought the vampires were quite silly though. They looked like drunkards and were more like zombies than vampires. Ben (Giacomo Rossi Stuart) as a zombie vampire trying to break into Robert’s home in a clumsy manner was absolutely priceless :joy:
