Going to make it an easy one… (Forgive me if I don’t reply tomorrow, I’ll be resting.)
If anyone remembers the BBC2 series ‘Moviedrome’, on a Sunday evening, BBC2 (1989) with Alex Cox presenting, then I think that this film was featured in the original series of that wonderful season of unusual/ ‘Cult’ Films…
**I remember it, because it was the time of the legendary Murray Walker and James Hunt doing the commentary for BBC2 's 'Grand Prix, Formula One highlights on a Sunday evening. **
It was the year that Alex Cox, on a Sunday (1989) intodruced us to ‘The Big Silence’, and ‘A Bullet For The General’
I have the answer … ‘TA DAH’ … the fault is with the DVD scan. I watched a Super 8mm cut down version (35 mins approx) over the weekend, and all the verticals are correct this time … no curving at all - Also, the colour, sharpness and contrast have been played around with on the DVD version … Let’s hope it gets some better love and attention when it’s next released.
I must admit, I’ve never even heard of the film, but I recognised the superb Jackie (The Hustler) Gleason, and kind of figured out that it was the back of Steve’s head.
A film I would love to see…
Here’s one I loved, and watched four times, until it was misappropriated…
An historical tale, supposedly based on real events…
The Super 8mm print is masked to approx’ 16x9 ratio … I can’t tell the age of the print, but it’s probably from the mid 1970s, the colour is still very vivid, but not that forced digital look
… it’s Italian language, but this home movie version appears to be made in Holland.
Perhaps, @Grinder will know more on this subject ???
Hm, I was not aware of the problems of the DVD versions concerning image/aspect ratio.
I think the first German DVD from Starmedia was based on 1,85:1 TV master. The second one from NEW i think was a copy of a french DVD.
But mine is not playing anymore since the surface has turned black.
The third one in Mediabook of UN DOLLARO BUCCATO maybe uses same master as NEW…i am not sure.
I have a German Super 8 print which runs about 48 minutes. Fine color and in 1,85:1.
Then I also have an Italian Super 8 version with also fine color, 32 minutes and in 1,66:1.
But the best Version I ever saw was German 35mm copy in cinema with almost perfect Agfa colors and for sure in Scope.
