The Good, the Bad and the Ugly / Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo (Sergio Leone, 1966)

Leone himself had cut it out after the premiere.

He surely had his reasons for doing so. We should appreciate that.

This scene shouldn’t be in the film.

he cut it out after the premiere? why does mgm put it in there then. this bugs me now. i am personally one of those people who want to see the longest version ever, and i rather watch a 5 hour movie then a 90 minute one, but if it’s obvious the director cut it out then well…

It was shown with the german dub on german TV several times, so DVDRs exist.

Maybe only because the film was too long, but who knows?

I think we had the same discussion before, maybe also in this thread.

Films don’t get inevitable better if they become longer. There are meanwhile several DCs who are shorter than the original theatrical version

I think the reason for adding the scene was also mentioned on the documentary of the 2-disc set. Anyway, that’s why the new version is called extended version not director’s cut.

Whole scene is quite awkward and the adding of the scene also makes a little problem with continuity (I never thought the sudden appearing of Tuco’s friends as a continuity problem) and the pacing of the film.

I think it was cut out just because it didn’t work with the entirety of the film.

And it’s not a necessary scene, at a certain point adding additional scenes makes a film too long, and the added scenes begin to work against the film.

Same goes for the still missing Socorro scene.

The interesting thing in the Grotto scene is not that the scene tells us where Tuco got his henchmen (which nobody needs to know), the interesting thing would be what the scene tells us about Tuco. At least not enough new to justify it’s inclusion.

I prefer it without the extra scenes to be honest.

Further to my previous post, I had a look last night at ā€œLeonenut’sā€ cut of OUATITW, he’s used the SE the most part cutting in sections from the Italian DVD. It flows very well the only down side is that the quality of the Italian print is inferior to the SE in both sharpness and colour so its quite obvious what’s been cut in. Still a damn fine effort, I for one will enjoy seeing these in the longest cuts currently available thanks to Leonenut! If anyone views any of the others before I get a chance please post your comments. I’ll check out GBU next.

I prefer the previously unseen footage which is spliced in to their respective slots provide an integral part of the story line. It’s just a shame that the other piece of lost footage was too deteriorated to be included.

this is out on DVD for a few years now btw. i’m sure a BluRay will come soon

I wouldn’t be surprised if Blu Ray releases are in the pipeline. My Name is Nobody and For A Few Dollars More had HD DVD releases in Germany.

If any Leone’s get a release on blu-ray i will sell a load of my stuff to get a player (probably a ps3) and a HD television.

can anyone explain the relationship between Baker, Stevens and Bill Carson?

what was their relationship, and what did the three have to do with the case of gold? i kind of have the general idea, it would be nice if someone could offer a full explanation.

also…how did Lee van Cleef become a Union officer? he visited a rebel fort to get word of Bill Carson and the 3rd, and then the next time he shows up, he’s in a Union Uniform in a position of command.

thanks for responding!

as for van cleef, i think he’s just a badass, or he’s always been somehow army-related, maybe he was army and they welcomed him back with open arms since they’re short of qualified officers, etc…

when he’s having dinner with tuco, and while wallace beats him up he has such an air of authority, control. i love that scene.

(looks down at pipe, tamps it) ā€œhow’s your digestion now.ā€

btw i have watched this movie a couple more times and i think it is now my favorite film of all time.

Setenza was actually a Union Sergeant .

I think ā€œThe Good, the Bad and the Uglyā€ in Cinema, is even better than Blu-Ray, because only on the big screen you can see its apocalyptic greatness…

It showed on the big screen here in Dublin last week and I missed it :frowning:
