Taste of Killing / Per il gusto di uccidere (Tonino Valerii, 1966)

How much did this go for?

I was looking out for this one for a couple of years. Whenever I’ve seen it it’s been around Ā£100. I’ve been trying to add to my Wild East collection for a couple of years, now left with the rarer ones. So, when I was offered A Taste of Killing at Ā£50 recently, I bought it (even though I said I’d never spend that much on one dvd).

And how did I rate my most expensive spaghetti western? It was ok! Like most people have said, it’s a good watch following what we expect from a spaghetti western. It kept me entertained for sure. 5.5/10 for me

Probably something daft like £200. The first WE disc I ever bought was The Dirty Outlaws for about £50, which worked out well since it was an immediate favourite for me.

I too managed to get that in the past year. Another difficult find though. Some Wild East are on eBay for crazy prices. Not sure they sell though.

Matalo was sky high before the Arrow set came out, but I’m not sure about now. The rarest one I have is probably Pistoleros.

I was lucky enough to get Pistoleros too. Have you got most of the Wild East releases?

I don’t even have half of them. @The_Man_With_a_Name has pretty much every one of them I believe.
I searched for years for the WE Sartana DVD, and was only ever able to get it after Arrow released their box set.

I have them all with the exception of the promo copy of Today We Kill, Tomorrow We Die, which exists in limited numbers.
Some Wild East releases have never been surpassed and might remain the only versions. The majority have been upgraded by other companies but WE still have great extras that are worth having.

First watch 2007:

"An ordinary SW, made by a not so inspired director, who tries hard to copy Leone, but has not the talent to do so. You will recognise many familiar faces and locations from Leone’s Dollar trilogy.
The basic plot idea is interesting and also very typical for a SW.

Good enough for one watch, and of course recommended for fans."

2nd watch 2015:

ā€œI rewatched it recently, and hey, it is better than I remembered it in all departments. I even liked some aspects of Valerii’s directing, and this is probably his best directed film (not including Leone’s MNIN of course).
A solid and entertaining Spag with some good scenes and especially a good final. I raise my rating from 5 to 6/10.
But one should cut out the first 3 min. A cheesy song and some senseless shots of our hero on horse in front of a very kitschy sundown background. And it is not the title sequence, which follows thereafter.ā€

3rd watch 2026:

And I’m wondering about my 2015 assessment, cause actually the film does not make much with its interesting SW plot. The possible complexity of all the character interactions remains undeveloped, with the dialogues being very generic and the actors don’t do more than necessary. The photography is ok, but despite what looks like a bigger budget than usual a certain lack of atmosphere typical for Valerii’s next westerns is already apparent.
I now have not much of an idea which scenes I then spotted as better directed. Especially the bigger action scenes are quite boringly done.

So going back to my initial 2007 rating, it mostly gave me again just a disappointing painting by numbers feeling.
4,5/10

Maybe next time it is a good one again …
