My Name is Pecos
(Due once di piombo)
Maurizio Lucidi, 1966
Drama-oriented B-westerns with official directing credits to Leon Klimovsky are all very well, but revisiting Pecos was a good reminder of what make me enjoy this genre so much. The plot is nowhere as ambitious, but it’s an example - one of this genre’s very best of them - of how a very simple and basic plot can be executed very well for what it is, and the anti-imperialist subtext further elevates the ”lone hero vs bad guys occupying a town” premise (for which i’m a sucker anyway). It’s strangely enough often compared to The Return of Ringo, when Django would be a much more obvious source of inspiration (A lone hero returns to a nearly-deserted town to settle accounts with a bigoted American who murdered one or several loved ones out of pure spite against hispanics - even the same cemetery is used!). The performances are above average all round, Morton getting a special mention for his despicable over-the top personality. The low budget is obvious, but somehow the hand-wave that the town is being evacuated due to the outlaw emergency somehow raises the stakes a bit.
The opening scene is the most memorable moment, and sets the tone well. It loses a bit of it’s momentum midway, and there are some annoying cases of “idiot balls” (let me get this straight, Dr Burton, you tried, with your crippled hands, to disarm two armed outlaws!?) that lead to a somewhat exaggerated kill count which this kind of SW is prone to have, but has a satisfying conclusion (i frankly didn’t remember all twists and turns in the second half). It may not be one of the great spaghetti western, but as i’ve already stated, i’ts very rare to see someone take something seemingly generic and make it this entertaining.
I love your sentiments about the movie. My Name Is Pecos is one of my favorite SW’s because it checks a lot of the boxes you mentioned. In particular, the anti-imperialistic message you brought up as well as Pecos’s revenge as a form of social justice are handled in a way that isn’t preachy or contrived. We want to see Clane and his henchman suffer as much as Pecos.
Was able to find time to squeak in one more: Sonny and Jed.
First half brings up a lot of questions about character motives, but once Milian gets rolling, I just can’t help but let it all go and enjoy his consistently despicable over the top performance.
3.5/5
I also started Some Dollars for Django but after the first scene (and Steffen’s obligatory dive-and-shoot) it turns so tedious that I gave up. Enough for this year.
And the summary for the spagvemberfest 2025:
As you posted your updated top 20 only a few hours ago, why is Pecos then not in it?
And now, with Spagvember over, isn’t it a now good time for all forumists to update all the older top 20 lists, especially if the last update happened already many years ago?
Or even better, if you couldn’t make up your mind yet, create your fist one?
Hmm, my only contribution was Guns for San Sebastian, and that’s not even a real Spaggie.
Better than remembered, the ending still sucks, a solid film, maybe a 6/10 now.
It’s in my Alternate Top 20. Did you check that one yet, Stanton
?
Yep, so you have over 20 films which are also favourites and even better. That’s good …
… and you like Boot Hill, very good.
Lol. Thanks
! It is sometimes a tough decision for me to pick my favorite Top 20 SW’s in way that factors in my opinion (e.g. Requiem for a Gringo; My Name is Pecos) of what the greatest Top 20 movies are as well as what are the obvious tried and true masterpieces that no one can argue against (e.g. TGTBATU; Once Upon a Time In the West). My Top 20 factors in my picks of the inarguably greatest SW’s. My Alternative Top 20 factors in my opinion more what I think are the greatest SW’s, sans the inarguably greatest from the first list

No. 30 UNA DONNA CHIAMATA APACHE
I have finished this Spagvember with Super 8 reels (3 parts) of this ultra cheap and sleazy one. It seems to be inspired by SOLDIER BLUE but with zero budget and a script full of cliches. Anyway the score is nice and exploitation Fans should give this one a try.
Super 8 Version is about 51 minutes and a good summary.
4/10
Goodbye Spagvember 2025…it was a pleasure ![]()
Great picks with The Price of Power and California, both really strong westerns. Haven’t seen the middle film but I recognize the lyrics. ![]()
1981 - Buddy Goes West
Ended with a comedy yesterday. This is one that I discovered around 15 years ago. Feels like I’ve grown up with it now.
Bud Spencer–everyone’s favorite misanthrope–is back playing Doc (not Buddy) who unwittingly becomes the town’s doctor when he winds up with a briefcase full of surgical paraphernalia. Along with his Native American sidekick, there’s more to fix in the town of Yucca than constipation and tooth aches–a ruthless gang is trying to steal people’s land, but their motives are cloaked in conspiracy.
Ennio Morricone scores his last feature-length western before taking a hiatus that would last nearly 35 years. While he’s spoofs his own hits 50% of the time, the maestro never fails to conjure some catchy tunes.
It has been fun riding the spaghetti trail with everyone again this year!!! ![]()
Ok, but actually I’m not interested in an “objective” list, but which films one likes/enjoys the most. The idea of the top 20 (at least as I see it) is to name your 20 favourites, the 20 island films, the 20 Spags you would keep if you were only allowed to keep 20 for the rest of your life. The ones you rewatch the most, the ones you enjoy the most when you watch them.
Of course everyone can decide for himself how one compiles such a list, and a subjective factor is anyway in every “objective” list, but I would prefer it if you would name those 20 island films, and not the 20 you think that should be considered as the best.
