There’s a trend here. RIP
I also intend to watch at least one of his movies during the marathon. FUERA DE LA LEY is the only one which I never crossed by, should be my pick.
Day 5
Today’s movie - White Comanche (1968)
Very underwhelming film being Shatner’s only spaghetti western. The genre feel is almost completely absent from the costumes to the music, a weird jazzy composition that sounds very out of place here. Shatner is extremely hammy but Cotten delivers a great performance, of course. It’s decently budgeted and not completely unwatchable but this isn’t one I’d recommend until very late into the spaghetti adventure.
Day 5
Today’s George Martin film is one of my all time favorites in the genre, Taste of Killing.
Per il gusto di uccidere - The Spaghetti Western Database (spaghetti-western.net)
Craig Hill’s Hank “Lanky” Fellows epitomizes the true anti-hero as his actions are far from heroic while Martin’s Kennebeck character is equally far from being the truly evil and dastardly villain that we are accustomed to seeing in spaghetti westerns. Fellows cares for no one but himself and his one motivation in life is making himself wealthier. Kennebeck, on the other hand, at least has people in his life that care for him and he, in his own way, cares for them. The difference between the two characters is negligible at best which, for me, is what makes this movie so memorable. Tonino Valerii was a true master and it would have been extremely interesting to see what he might have eventually accomplished had his career not been derailed, to a certain extent, by Leone’s colossal ego.
Cool! Keeping it Creative and Fun,Great idea Phil. Hope all is well in the UK. I’m Watching THE DIRTY FIFTEEN for day 5 today. Just had the right time and rest to stay ultra focused to every second of this gem. Really watched this one all way through for the first time. Must say now that i’m a real fan of the movie now. Craig hill did a good performance in my opinion . Martin was shed in a different light than what I usually see him do. First Watched the AND THE CROWS WILL DIG YOUR GRAVE twice From the WILD EAST PRODUCTIONS Double bill. Love that film too,and the title is just Sick. This is my first fest ever here. Want to share that i am guilty to have not studied up on how to properly work the site yet and should have .SO Working on that,Going to robot soon… By the way dig your reviews .When reading them , often thinking wow, that’s what my take and opinion 9 time’s out of 10 is. Creepy really. Tom betts, You ,and DG bell are who impress me with there Insight, Time and efforts. .Don,t want to leave anyone thinking they suck, or hey —you. LoL There is a lot of talent in the family here. Them 3 are just who stand out right now to me. At the moment …jeeeeeeese. ok …umm this is my day 5.
I’m going to add this to my list for the month - great stuff, as I recall.
I’ve discovered my ‘theme’ for this year is Good Films ! … no Fidani or anything with Gordon Mitchell this time, I leave that to the younger braver enthusiasts !
Well said my friend thanks for info . hope your Friday is good one so far .stay safe and have a good weekend . Talk to u soon hopefully.
5th - I’ll take care of my enemies
Another accidentally discovered spagh with Southwood and what a pleasant surprise. I really like the story and twists in this one. Definitely check it out. 7/10
Thanks mate. Glad you like them.
One day I’ll get back into writing them more regularly.
For No.5 I went full Kraut…
Die schwarzen Adler von Santa Fe (I gringos non perdonano). The DVD (part of the Teutonenwestern Kollektion) looks great for a DVD but sounds quite shittily mixed and hollow. Would be great to see a HD restoration if this that also does away with missing frames and jumping images, but all in all this did well. Not English friendly, by the way. This Krautwestern is a rather conventional “Cowboys vs. Indians” adventure with rather impressive action sequences, some funny scenes made funnier by the Germand ub, but not too much realism overall. All in all it was a fun watch and took me back to childhood TV hours, some decent efforts shine through occasionaly (and I guess it meant well) but this definitely isn’t a must see and not up there with the cult qualities of the Karly May movies, and it’s a rather corny experience. 2/5
Spagvember Fest Day 5
Killer Calibro 32
https://www.spaghetti-western.net/index.php/Killer_calibro_32
First time watch. A very intriguing and interestingly crafted SW tied in with a Crime Mystery. Peter Lee Lawrence is a little too clean cut and dressed for my taste, but he is super cool as the gentleman gunslinger. I feel as if I missed something in the intricate plot points so this definitely gets a rewatch later on.
One of my favourites! I actually quite enjoy PLL’s cleaner look. It helps make him feel a bit more unique and less like another Man With No Name wannabe. It’s absolutely tragic what happened to him, I would have loved to see him in more films.
Totally agree, a promising star taken too soon by a cruel disease. I think his look needs to grow on me a little, I don’t mind spiffy looking at all, he just looked a little out of place in the Italian West at first.
If you haven’t already, check out Raise Your Hands, Dead Man, You’re Under Arrest. PLL is great in it. It’s a little goofy in its humour buts it’s a very good film overall with a great soundtrack to go with it. You can find a pretty good quality version on YouTube from Film&Clips.
Day 5 - Deadlock
Yesterdays pick was pretty bland, tonight I need something with more edge. Deadlock.
I have Spanish DVD but I have absolutely no memory about the movie.
I think part of the issue is that Peter Lee had such a baby face. You dress up Van Cleef or Garko and it works just fine because their faces looked hardened by life so it was believable. But, in some of his films, Lawrence’s baby face worked for him. For instance, when he played Billy the Kid in I’ll Kill Him and Return Alone or when he was the “Romeo” character in Ultimate Gunfighter aka Ride for a Massacre (which has one of the weirdest yet coolest endings in spaghetti western history by the way). I do love Killer Calibre .32 and I really like Peter Lee in it but I do think he looks a little out of place. Garko looked much more the part when he revived the Silver character in The Price of Death.
I saw this for the first time not long ago. Great choice!
if that 4K disc wasn’t so expensive this might be a killer evening entertainment
You know, a lot of us are watching the same movies from the same sets, just on different days. Next year, maybe a few of us should work on arranging a couple of synchronized viewings, maybe all watch a movie together over zoom or somesuch, stream it or upload it to YouTube, create ourselves a couple of SWDB SpagvemberFest video commentary tracks.
Food for thought (plus I’ll need the extra year to learn how f#cking Zoom works)…
