Spagvember Fest Day 7

Una Bara per lo Sceriffo

https://www.spaghetti-western.net/index.php/Bara_per_lo_sceriffo,_Una

First time watch. Anthony Steffen’s first appearance of this year’s Fest and it’s a good one. The story is fairly typical of the Western genre, SW and regular, but it’s executed very well and the characters are well developed.

SPAGVEMBERFEST DAY 7

My pick for tonight - Eureka Entertainment’s “Masters of Cinema” presentation of A Fistful of Dynamite (aka Duck, You Sucker!) (Leone, 1971) - stands for me as proof that, no matter how much one might like the rough-around-the-edges scuzziness with which spaghettis and other grindhouse genres were once presented - and I love the way a tenth-gen, washed-out VHS rip suits the content in this genre - the inescapable truth is that a loving restoration can make a familiar film feel like a whole new experience. I owned AFoDynamite for many years prior to picking up the Eureka blu, courtesy of an MGM DVD, and tbh I didn’t especially care for it. The blu release made me feel like I’d never REALLY seen it before; as soon as I watched that blu for the first time, I immediately watched it again. And, despite the lateness of the hour, it’s not inconceivable that I’ll find myself doing likewise tonight.

6th - Gunman Sent By God - Started as really promising spagh with an unusual antihero played by Steffen, but ended up in a kind of stupid showdown involving clowns battling bad guys alogside with mighty Stiff. 5/10

7th - Price Of Death - I was always a bit hesitant to watch this and I could actually live without seeing this detective spagh with Garko and Kinski, but it was bearable. 6/10

Spagvemberfest 2021 Day 7: DJANGO PREPARE A COFFIN (1968)

Here’s one I’ve been wanting to watch for years, and only just now got my hands on the Arrow Blu-ray. Boy, I’m glad I did!

It’s probably the one unofficial Django sequel that skews closest to the original character, thanks to Terence Hill’s resemblance to Franco Nero, his similar outfit and the appearance of a machine gun in a coffin. It’s also a pretty darn good movie it’s own right.

Django masquerades as a hangman and recruits a group of innocent men condemned to die to help him get revenge on villains George Eastman and Horst Frank. And man these guys are great villains, really helping to lift this movie into near-classic territory. Hill is also suprisingly good in a tougher than usual role.

A good plot, tight direction from Fernando Baldi, a good score, and plentiful action and violence really kept my interest. Yes, it’s no match for the original, but it comes much closer to that film’s quality than I ever expected it to do. 8/10

’CUT-THROATS NINE’ (1972)

Directed with gory relish by Joaquin Luis Romero Marchent, this oddity in the genre is filled to overflowing with delicious amounts of gore strewn upon the snow-capped mountain landscapes; and must surely rank as one of the bleakest, most consistently pessimistic SW’s ever made.

image

Starring the always welcome Robert Hundar, Jose Manuel Martin, and Lorenzo Robledo, this a combination of ‘The Dirty Dozen’ meets Italian gore-fest. Despite dragging in places, the film, despite its over-powering sense of doom and gloom, is strangely compelling. One of the few SW’s I know that does not feature any face to face shoot outs, or prolonged poker games. It does, however, feature one particularly nasty rape scene, that I fast forwarded through.

Despite having a sense of morbid inevitability running through it, and with a conclusion that comes close to rivalling that of ‘The Great Silence’ (although not in terms of greatness), I found ‘Cut-Throats Nine’ to be strangely compelling. Perhaps my love of horror helped with this…
Worth watching, if only once, and to behold a true SW oddity.

Enjoyed this more than my first watch - enough to bump it up to a 7/10. I still think it has quite a few slow areas and takes a bit to get to some shootouts but the second half of the film is really great.

Hi, Phil … yeah, the Warner archive disc is a stunner - particularly after years of watching the film in so-so quality. It’s almost too pristine !

Day 8: ‘Django Spara Per Primo’ (1966) ‘Django Shoots First’

Likeable western, has some nice touches of humor, good action scenes and two knock out leading ladies … Ida Galli (Evelyn Stewart) and Erika Blanc. Watching this one with the Italian dub, as the English language version has an unfamiliar voice actor dubbing Fernando Sancho … and that put me off.

15 Scaffolds for a Killer aka The Dirty Fifteen

Returning to George Martin today, this is an intriguing entry which once more pairs Martin with Craig Hill. This one possesses a very unique plot and is fun from start to finish. I enjoyed re-visiting this one.

Today’s movies - Vengeance for Vengeance (1968)

A rewatch, and a first time watch in a language I understand, yet I can’t say it changed the movie much for me. It’s strength lies not in the script but in all of its spaghetti-isms; the music, the violence, the villain, all at their gritty best. A pretty odd title since the film doesn’t really concern vengeance.

Also, Duck You Sucker (1971) (audio commentary)

I watched this with the commentary by Sir Christopher Frayling, what can I say… the man knows his shit. It’s very insightful and gives loads of neat tidbits about everytime concerning the film. Highly recommended audio commentary.

Yes sir ! This indeed is a intriguing entry indeed. Just recently watched this one for the first time.Have to say i really enjoyed this one from start to finish. In fact, lets say i was blown away . This is way up there for me. Guilty of half ass watching it twice before and did not give it the chance it deserved . So very glad iv’e done so this time around…In my opinion this is a hell of a terrific entry to the genre . Think this one just might be severely Underrated. Gonna have to do some investigating .Don’t see people talking about it like they should be to me .Know what i mean? Would be Standing out. Guess its kinda a little like A Taste Of Death In way’s ,like its a Great film i think and has some Bad Ass camera work going on all through it. The story"s good,Acting is Special. would be epic if restored.Just needs some love and attention as D.G Bell would say…Needs good presentation . Also Shocking why no one has yet picked this babe up. Really think its that good and Truly deserves it . Sorry about that, Ha, Ha, L.O.L…Um, yeah . I like A Taste Of Death. More so i will say that i like The Dirty Fifteen even better. Great pick and agree with you about it wholeheartedly. The Dirty Fifteen to me is very enjoyable Spaghetti western that deserves more as well .[quote=“LankyGringo, post:2118, topic:3590, full:true”]

I tried re-watching Django’s Cut Price Corpses, but couldn’t make it further than halfway through. Therefore, I decided to view God Is My Colt and unfortunately, this didn’t turn out to be much of an improvement in the end. The issue is that the flick is essentially a composite of Django’s Cut Price Corpses and Paid in Blood with some additional footage inserted in order to consolidate the whole copy-and-paste hack job.

The derivative storyline is basically about a gang of baddies terrorizing a small town and about the dependable Italian butcher Jeff Cameron cleaning up the whole place for the local sheriff. There was probably more to the breathtaking story, but I didn’t really care enough to keep track of the whole schmear, so I can’t give a more detailed account. If you want to have some fun with uncle Batzella in the spaghetti western land, just watch Paid in Blood, which is way more coherent and smooth, and skip everything else, this thing included.
