Try not to wear that disc out, mate.

I’m kinda intrigued now those are all my favorite elements of proper cinematic torture.

In all honesty, I can’t see myself completing this year. I mean I’ve already missed two days from the first ten and, despite having purposely paid as little attention to the movie as possible the first few times I had it on, I’m already flinching from it and we’re not even half way. And I’ve had to relegate it to watching it bloody late at night; the wife was properly done with it by day 2, I think.

zero discipline… that is outrageous

You’ve come to your senses! LOL … yeah, pack it in, or you’ll resent the movie for the rest of your days
Spagfest isn’t supposed to be torture, is it ? … but if someone were masochistically inclined there’s no shortage of material to accommodate them. Try a season of Fidani or just the endless riding scenes played in a loop for 30 days?

Day 11: Taste of Killing

So just when I was about to lose all faith in the genre, I picked a goodie. Violence, cynicism, sadism, maniacally laughing Mexicans… all the things I love in a spaghetti western. Also helps that it look gorgeous and has a great soundtrack.

This was always a concern but it’s why I was careful in picking a movie that I liked enough (I thought) to watch multiple times in relatively quick succession but not so much that, if it turned out I couldn’t do it without resenting the movie, I wouldn’t be spoiling a big favourite of mine. The movie I chose needed to sit in that ā€œlike it a lot, but I’m not fanatical about itā€ bracket.

Indeed not, sir. But, for me personally, a great degree of the fun in these movie challenges - not just SpagvemberFest but others too - is in making them a bit of a… well, a challenge. To that end, I also quite like those movie challenges where there’s a different challenge every day but, on some of the days, there are challenges such as ā€œMovie you liked, but that you now hateā€ or Most disappointing movie of last year" or what have you. Nowt wrong with a dab of masochism here and there, pickle! :slightly_smiling_face:

And, just like that, my thoughts turned to SpagvemberFest 2021… :slightly_smiling_face:

I’ve seen Some Dollars for Django (1966) and found it surprisingly enjoyable. Albeit predictably corny and naive, the story is quite well penned and kept my interest throughout the running time despite no cattle being involved. Unfortunately, the biggest drawback of the motion picture is Castellari’s direction; not that it’s bad, but it’s pretty uncharismatic and characterless and lacks the kind of directing assurance Castellari would find in his later pictures. Overall, just slightly above average, but an enjoyable early entry thanks to its fairly solid script. Tomorrow I’ll check out A Long Ride from Hell (1968).

Day 11-go for broke

An enjoyable, kinda silly western starring many genre greats and a nice score, despite all of this it failed to make any kind of impression on me, I would recommend it but not to beginners. Lenzi is way better at crime films

I had the same thoughts after finishing Lenzi’s Una pistola per cento bare

I looked into my list of watched spaghettis and realized I have to watch only one to enter golden 300 club. Now I had to think preeeetty hard what to pick up to achieve this position. It must be something special.

My marathon got abruptly cut off by some Covid-19 related bullshit, anyways as of yesterday I’m back on the horse. Revisited Vari’s A Hole in the Forehead - thoroughly entertaining stuff for sure, Ghidra is always a good lead for me. Hundar makes a great villain aswell, he looks terrifying!

  1. Ricci: The Great Treasure Hunt
-Tonino Ricci was responsible for some of the worst films of the genre but surprisingly he also made The Great Treasure Hunt which is one of the better films of the early 70’s. Made a bit tongue-in-cheek with some comedic elements but far from the regular slapstick stuff of the time. Good entertaining film with a good dose of Rosalba Neri in leather pants. 6/10

Hm, Tonino made a bunch of White Fang spaghs I never heard of, have you seen them, are they any good? The one with Maurizio Merli looks interesting.

I still wanna get the German DVD, but for the moment until I can work my summer job again, I’m watching it on the YouTube channel Films&Clips. Their print is slightly enlarged, but not in a distracting way. I’ve heard this is one of the darker efforts of the genre, but it looks no less enjoyable.

’Face to Face’ (1967)

One of my top 20 Spaghetti Westerns. Beautifully directed by Sergio Sollima, and accompanied by a gorgeous Ennio Morricone soundtrack.

Tomas Milian is one of my favourite Spaghetti actors, and he doesn’t fail to rise to the occasion with his weird hairstyle, and a quirky character interpretation. Gian Maria Volonte, as always, is excellent, and excels in his role as the self-righteous school teacher, whose morals are questioned when he encounters Beau, the bandit, played magnificently by Milian.

A host of familiar faces, including William Berger, Frank Brana, Aldo Sanbrell, Linda Veras, and Angel de Poza, add bandoliers of fun

A thoroughly entertaining film, which perfectly encapsulates the subject of role-reversal; and which needs to be seen in its entirety, in order to admire its craftsmanship.

Hopefully watching ā€˜The Big Gundown’ this evening, another Sollima classic…

SPAGVEMBERFEST 2020: DAY 11

Amd as my better half drifts off to sleep it’s time for my spag du jour: A Fistful of Dollars (Leone, 1964) , a jukebox musical featuring the songs of ABBA and starring Clint Eastwood as a blushing bride-to-be who needs to find out which of three charming fellows is her father before the big day. I mean, why not?

Tonight will be my third crack at the Frayling commentary and I’m still confident/hopeful that Mr. Frayling will see me through the rest of the week at least, and maybe as much as the entire middle third of the month (although that’s asking a lot). After that I don’t know how I’m going to sustain an interest. Count the hats, maybe?
