FESTIVAL. A retrospective on Luigi Zampa and a Sergio Leone Exhibition

26/08/09 - The International Rome Film Festival, running from October 15 to 23, 2009 under the High Patronage of the President of Italy, is planning a retrospective on the great Italian director Luigi Zampa, put on thanks to the close collaboration established with the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia - National Film Archive. The occasion will be marked by the premiere screening of the restored version of La Romana (Woman of Rome), Zampa’s 1954 film starring Gina Lollobrigida that he wrote together with Alberto Moravia, Ennio Flaiano and Giorgio Bassani, restored by SKY in collaboration with the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia - National Film Archive. The retrospective line-up includes films that ratified the partnership between the Roman director and Alberto Sordi, such as The Traffic Policeman (1961) and Be Sick…It’s Free (1968), as well as those that resulted from Zampa’s collaboration with Vitaliano Brancati like Difficult Years (1948) and The Art of Getting Along (1954).

Meanwhile, eighty years on from the birth of Sergio Leone and twenty years after the director’s death, the Festival will be paying tribute to one of the most symbolic personalities in Italian and world cinema with an exhibition entitled Sergio Leone, uno sguardo inedito.

This tribute will give a profile of Leone using materials and unpublished photographs taken by Angelo Novi. The exhibition is curated by Gian Luca Farinelli, the director of the Bologna Cineteca, with creative inspiration for the staging supplied by the two Oscar® winners Dante Ferretti and Francesca Lo Schiavo, who will offer audiences a fresh vision of the director’s treasures and extraordinary innovations through a series of emotionally-charged displays.

The exhibition is produced by Equa in collaboration with the International Rome Film Festival. It has been made possible thanks to the direct involvement of the Leone family and the Bologna Cineteca with contribution from the Rome Municipality, the Lazio Region, ACEA and Poste Italiane, under the patronage of the Province of Rome.

Then, October 29, 2009 sees the opening of a further photographic exhibition on Sergio Leone, this time held in the exposition space at Cinecittà 2 Arte Contemporanea. Here, a selection of 90 unpublished pictures will take audiences through the great master’s professional and private life, from his beginnings to his international fame and fortune. The staging is overseen by Studio Purini.
