Return of the Seven / Return of the Magnificent Seven (Burt Kennedy, 1966)

For those of you who haven’t seen this the characters played by Steve McQueen, Horst Bucholtz and Rosenda Monteros in the original are also in this film but played by different actors.

Robert Fuller plays the McQueen character and one can see why his aspirations to be a leading man in movies fell apart watching this (like McQueen he had been hot in TV westerns in fact two big western series). He is feeble. It is pretty obvious that Yul Brynner demanded and got a gopher this time.

The plot is pretty awful and perfunctory. This bandito wants a big church built and he doesn’t even have an architect.

Burt Kennedy was a writer appointed above his station as director. He’s mediocre at best and in his only really decent film he was firmly under James Garner’s cosh and filming someone else’s funny script.
