Official Spaghetti Western Box Office Gross thread---Just ask!

Nothing about ticket prices, but for inflation rate I just noticed that from year to year there is increasing number of films that gross over 800 million Lire. So a film may rank in the top 50 for that year with a gross of 400 million Lire in 1966 but by 1975, a film grossing 400 million lir might only rank in the top 80 or 90 top grossing films for that year. Thats why I think ranking the films based for that particular year is useful.

1973-1978 (46)

  1. Mio Nome E’ Nessuno 3620
  2. Zorro 2730
  3. Genio Due Compari Un Pollo 2684
  4. Bianco Il Giallo Il Nero 1898
  5. Keoma 1572
  6. Cipolla Colt 1191
  7. Ci Risiamo Vero Provvidenza? 1172
  8. Valdez Il Mezzosangue 1162
  9. Quattro Dell’Apocalisse 898
  10. California 785
  11. Giubbe Rosse 732
  12. Lo Chiamavano Tresette 726
  13. Storia Di Karate’ Pugnie Fagioli 725
  14. Tutti Per Uno Botee Per Tutti 598
  15. La’ Dove Non Batte Il Sole 551
  16. Sogno Di Zorro 544
  17. Il Grande Duello 512

I combined the years 73-78 because SW’s were so sparse during this time. The genre was pretty much dead at this point. Not even Gemma could save it. Silver Saddle Bombed and California did ok but not great.

Good work again Col DM and sad to see the decline of the SW.

Among the plain/dull Comedy SWs there were still some

HIGH QUALITY SWS such as:

  1. ZORRO 1975 Alain Delon Excellent acting, plot, music is fab.
  2. KEOMA 1976 Franco Nero Fair Django return film, not bad.
  3. VALDEZ HORSES 1973 Charles Bronson Beautiful film , Bronson superb.
  4. FOUR OF THE APOCALYPSE 1975 Fabio Testi . Western/Horror from master FULCI.
11.GIUBBE ROSSE/RED COATS 1974 Fabio Testi. Very entertaining with Lynne Frederick
12.LO CHIAMAVANO TRESETTE 1973 George Hilton. Lighthearted, gimmicky Western
15.LA DOVE NON BATTE IL SOLE 1976 Lee Van Cleef Good Western/martial arts tale.
17.IL GRANDE DUELLO 1972 Lee Van Cleef Exciting plot, with Horst Frank.

Of course!

As far as I know the inflationrate was much higher in Italy than in other european countries, the Lira was a very unstable currency. (Someone with more information?)

The only way for a fair comparison is to dertermine the amount of sold tickets or spectators.

In Germany all the hitlists are made of spectator numbers.

Sadly there is not much information from the heydays of SWs (for now).

Most successful were Once upon a Time in the West and Trinity Is Still My Name.

Reading in Marco Giusti’s DIZIONARIO I found a possible reason for DJANGO not being as succesful as many of us thought it must have been
The film had an ‘VM 18’ rating (not suitable for people under the age of 18)

Spaghetti westerns were particularly popular among what Giusti calls ‘I ragazzi’ (the boys) so an ‘18’ rating could harm the chances of a film consirably. Another ‘18’ movie was Se sei vivo, spara! (Django Kill!),

Other films like Navajo Joe weren’t succesful first, due to this ‘18 rating’, and did better after some cuts were made and the film had received the desired ‘14’ rating
Cuts to avoid an ‘18’ rating were also made in Death rides a Horse, Arizona Colt and Today it’s me, tomorrow it’s you (I already mentioned this cut in my review); often they tried to hide those cuts with music: loud music was played over the place where the cut was made.

In Germany nearly every Spag had an 18 rating in the 60s.

In Holland too, but in Italy they apparently were more lenient and I thought these Box Office results were Italian

HAHAHAHAHA That’s hilarious!

Yes, the box office was only from Italy.

Col.,
I converted the titles from Italian to English. Thanks again for posting all this info! My work here was simply for the benefit of all the English-only speakers (like me!) out there. Frequently there were more than one suitable English title so I chose the one I am most familiar with and/or the English title on the DVD I own. I had heard of (although not seen) all of these except the scary sounding “Karate, Fists, and Beans”. I tried to pair up the English/Italian names in this post but the formatting did not look right.
Thanks again,
RF

Do you have numbers for these films?

Apocalypse Joe/ Leopoldo Savona
Coffin For The Sheriff/ Mario Caiano
Dallas/ Ignacio Iquino
Last Tomahawk/ Harald Reinl
Man Called Django/ Edoardo Mulargia
Sabata The Killer/ Tullio Demichelli
Shango/ Edoardo Mulargia
Stranger In Paso Bravo/ Salvatore Rosso
Tequila/ Tullio Demichelli
Too Much Gold For One Gringo/ Ignacio Iquino
Train For Durango/ Mario Caiano
Two Pistols And A Coward/ Georgio Ferroni

Thank you!

we should add all these numbers into the db, have a subpage boxoffice/business or something like the imdb with exact release dates, shooting locations, box office gross etc

edit: i added this to our GBU page, take a look at it and let me know what you think. i guess most of the popular pages could get a subpage like that

A subpage called boxoffice/business is a very useful addition for a movie page

Still, I think a page with a list of all these box office grosses (so a list like Col. Mortimer and Romaine Fielding did) have made, is more essential
I’ve been visiting this thread on a regular base to check how films did at the box office initially
The results were often quite surprising, in the first place in comparison to results of other movies
It’s very surprising, and interesting, to read that Forty Yuma Gold initially was far more succesful than Django
What I mean to say is that those results are mainly interesting in relation to other results

yeah a separate page would even be more helpful, I agree

Hey Romaine, send me a PM with your email address. I’ll send you a document that me and Stanton did.

Any Germans here who have any idea how to get German box office data?

We seriously need German data. Italian box office is good, but not too indicative of a movie’s true worldwide success.

I gotta know, whatwere the takings for…

Matalo
Shoot the Living, Pray for the Dead
Today WeKill, Tomorrow We Die
Beyond the Law
Forgotten Pistolero
Carambola

I’ll have to borrow that book from the library again and I’ll let you know

Matalo
89 mio Lire =ca 273 000 spectators

Shoot the Living, Pray for the Dead
205 mio =ca 531 100

Today We Kill, Tomorrow We Die
941 mio =ca 3 148 000

Beyond the Law
