Iām not a huge lover of Tepepa eitherā¦most rank it amongst the best but for me itās more run of mill largely for this reason, but the saving grace is heās played by Milian so heās a bit more entertaining than Luke in āNightā¦ā. Fortunately I like Steiner and Welles though and they prevent the film from being a bad one, even if I wish Welles had a bit more screen time.
I agree, I think itās one of his best performances. He seems much more intimidating and needlessly violent in it compared to his other roles.
Yeah I think youāre probably rightā¦except Four of the Apocalypse maybe.

Night of the Serpent has an unusual story, and with a drunk in the lead also an unusual hero, but only in the first half, which pretty slow builds up to the more typical 2nd half with the usual shoot-outs. Itās not a good sign when a film tends to get boring at the moment the action scenes begin to increase, but the better parts of the film all happen in the first half, when the audience is not exactly sure what the film is about and in which direction it will went. Unfortunately Petroni has not much ideas what to do with the interesting constellations, he is not really able to bring life to the characters, nor to the story. Actually he would also have needed more charismatic actors for most of the filmās roles. Instead we get later several uninspired shoot-outs, but at least the ending of the film, even if in parts implausible, is the best part of that 2nd half. Petroni is not a great director, e.g the use of widescreen images is not one of his strengths (Death Rides a Horse is at least better in that regard), his action directing was barely exciting, but he always managed to make his films look good, they all look like he had some of the higher budgets in the genre. So consequential the best stuff in NotS are some scenes which are not that western like, the scenes between the drunk hero and the boy and his replacement mother, and some of the scenes with Luigi Pistilli in the 1st half. And there is, but only as a minor but not unimportant character for the filmās plot, a colorful mexican, who seems to be half bandit and half āhacienderoā, also the one who saves the end. All in all itās not a bad film, but to indecisive to be of greater interest to me. I stay with my 5/10 rating.
A lot of people feel this is sort of a mediocre film, but I think it still might be one of my top twenty. Youāre probably right @stanton about the action scenes being middling, but honestly the non-action parts you mentioned like Lukeās training to become a gunslinger are so strong they carry the movie for me. Also think Luke Askewās more subdued performance works incredibly well with the story.
I think weāve discussed this before but I agree entirely. It is extremely underrated imho.
Hah, mightāve been our first discussion on the forum.
I absolutely agree, @RockyRaccoon. Not mediocre in my opinion either.
Give your rating for Night of the Serpent. New poll is open for this one on the original post at the top of the page.
Finally able to watch this movie!! Itās now on you tube in English. There seems to be a new western channel on You Tube; Django360.
Edit: the first half was a little bit boring. The second half was good because of the action scenes and I liked the main character.
Not much new stuff there, however, the channel has also a very nice print of The Stranger Returns.
According to Thomas Weisser:
" The āSerpentā is a notorious bandit (Luigi Pistilli) who wreaks havoc on Silver City when, after attempting a bank robbery, he and his gang are trapped inside a saloon. The plot synopsis sounds similar to that of Adios Hombre (1966)ā¦"
Benito Stefanelliās hair cut thoughā¦
Ha ha, a typical Weisser fairy tale ā¦
I usually look at the Weisser entry after Iāve seen the movie but on one film I looked at it before and he said in his synopsis that everyone was killed at the end. I was miffed that Iād ruined the ending for myself but sure enough that wasnāt the ending and a several of the main characters including the hero didnāt get killed!
We should have a āmake your own Weisser-plot descriptionā topic for fun.
