Movie poll!

Not seen Born on the Fourth of July?

No, and I never will.
Tom Cruise has spoilt enough otherwise good movies for me.

Haha…glad i’m not the only one! Can’t bear to watch anything with him in it. Same goes for Mel Gibson and Michael Douglas… Don’t know why, they just all irritate the crap out of me.

Same here. Too long and for me, a little self indulgent. Still have a lot of respect for it but rarely watch.

Today it’s so hot round here, I think I don’t have the energy to post in a demanding thread like this…

I don’t hate THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY…I just find it way overrated. It is my least favorite of Leone’s films. It is not without its great moments, though, and I love Tuco. I have no problems with the length. My problem is that the film is too episodic. It is just seems to me that Leone is trying to outdo himself with each successive scene in the film and in so doing loses track of the heart of the story (just my opinion). If you want to read more of what I think about this film, you can search around the forum. I have talked about this at length, before.
I have no problems with people claiming GBU to be their favorite film, or thinking it is the best of the Spaghetti Westerns. But, I just find it to be incredibly overrated. I much prefer FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE, THE MERCENARY, and literally a few dozen others to it.

That song, “The Wind in My Face”, from CHARGE is, in my opinion, a very very funny song.
It is supposed to be bad—that’s what makes it work. And our compadre Phil is correct…it is very catchy, indeed!
It is without a doubt the best thing about that movie! ha ha!

CLAY PIGEONS is a decent film. Haven’t seen it for a few years, though.

I am very happy to see many others here find THE SEARCHERS to be overrated! I personally find John Ford to be overrated in many respects (although I do like some of his films a great deal). Also glad to see that I am not the only one that finds Stanley Kubrick overrated (though I like THE KILLING well enough and SPARTACUS is alright).

I like Dillinger’s post! It is too hot here, as well…think I had best stop posting in this demanding thread!

I think we must organize a football match, one team GBU fans and the ohter team (with pink jerseys ;D) the non GBU fans, just to setlle this matter once for all. ;D

Just now ideia who the referee would be

The “other” team will have problems to get enough players for their team. Unless we play only with 5 in a sports hall.

I would agree that The Searchers is overrated in it’s high priase as a Western. But I do ike the film and it is directed very well. It’s just that the long span of time in the film (apparently years) feels like days. The span of time is poorly handled. And it is apparently taking place all over the West. In this case, the entire West looks like Monument Valley all over the place. It’s a beuatiful place for a Western and this film films it the best, but their needs to be more variety than just Monument Valley and snow. I’d say something like Red River is much better than the searchers with a similar set up.

However Chris, I’m going to have to disagree on the stance that Ford is overrated. I think he is rated just fine and almost all his other westerns are great. He also has a fair amount of versatility. He made comedies, romances, Westerns, Dramas, historical films, and even an avant garde art film.

To fill in my overrated actor slot, I’d say George Raft is perfect for this. He is a bad actor who got a lot of lead roles in A-pictures.

I cant stand Tom Cruise either… What a douchebag. I finished watching Charge and the song does fit the movie…And it is catchy…I’ve been singing it all day! Coincidentally there’s a double feature here in LA coming up: “Holy Mountain” and “El Topo”, I’ve never seen either of them and I cant decide weather or not to go from the posts I’ve read here…

Best director: Sergio Leone, Sam Peckinpah, Don Siegel
Most overrated: William Friedkin, John Carpenter (sorry)
Most underrated: Ralph Nelson, John Glen

Fair enough. However, in my opinion, Howard Hawks was just as versatile as Ford and he isn’t often awarded the same high level of praise. I don’t mean to sound flippant, nor am I taking umbrage with your opinion regarding Ford; but, I think his versatility is overrated, as well.

I agree with you about Raft, though. All the way!

Tom Cruise the person is just…a bit of a jerk, and more than a little odd. Cruise the actor…eh. I can take him or leave him. He has done some OK stuff (COLLATERAL, RAIN MAN, a few others) and he has done some really bad stuff (too many to list).

As for that EL TOPO and THE HOLY MOUNTAIN double feature…you should go and check them out, amigo. You have to make up your own mind about these two films—no one else can do it for you! Yep. They are both that type of film!

i cant believe what im reading …The Searchers wholeheartedly deserves the praise it gets…great story, great cinematography, one of John Waynes more complex roles…well, its one of my favorite westerns at least

little bit bored to all these polls but what the heck, I have nothing better to do so:

That´s not very patriotic of you, haha. But seriously, there are are way worse directors out there. Harlin made some bad films, bud some enjoyable ones as well (A Nighmare on Elm Street 4, Die Hard 2)

I don’t care very much for Harlin’s films, but I think he was or is a very competent director for action scenes.

Still About Tom Cruise I like him in Ridley Scott Legend wich is a very forgotten film this days, and also in Risky Bussiness, but I confess I was paying more attention to Rebecca de Mornay a very good actress in all aspects.

Best movie ever: Once upon a time in the West
Worst movie ever: The Day after Tomorrow
Most overrated: Frightmare

Funniest: Trading Places
