Fair point, and that’s why I’ve been so skeptical towards it. It also reminds me that I’ve yet to finish Four of the Apocalypse, which I watched about an hour of some months ago, but for some reason I’ve not had the opportunity to watch the rest. This far, however, I would deem it to be somewhat better, although I have similar issues with that one.
But this isn’t disklike as much as his style simply doesn’t fit my taste. I’m a bit too squeamish, I guess.
There is nothing wrong with that. We are all united around here by our love for the movies in this genre (and others) but we all have our own reasons for exactly why we love them.

Saw the film for the first time last night and REALLY enjoyed it. As a disclaimer, I am not a Fulci fanboy. Zombi 2 is probably my favorite zombie film (with Shaun of the Dead), but I was disappointed by City of the Living Dead. However, this film kept my interest from start to finish. I liked the slow parts of the beginning building up to the violence later in the film. I thought all the actors did good jobs playing their respective roles. I thought the Chinese guy was really cool and something unusual that you don´t see in many westerns, especially US westerns. The cinematography and camera work paired with great production design make this a treat to look at. It has some cheeziness, but then again, all Spaghettis need some cheeze. Luckily, the cheeze is more like parmigiano to go with the spaghetti, as opposed to stinking bishop. The film had many reverted genre tropes, making it feel fresh. I personally feel like the twist, much in the same vein as Texas, Addio, carried little weight and didn´t change too many things. Sometimes the film was a little too incredible, like when Hilton, drunk as a, well, drunkard, shot the bottle he trew behind without looking. I also feel like trhere could have been more character development. Overall, I am excited to watch it again and give this film a solid 8/10.
I revisited Massacre Time not too long ago and it holds up pretty well. In large parts it’s a very fine example of the genre. Despite its mostly second rate locations it manages to create a cool visual atmosphere.
Ar the risk of causing turmoil, I’ll say I always found the gory cult films to be among Fulci’s weaker efforts. His gialli are brilliant films, though.
I’d say almost all of the most popular heroes and antiheroes of the genre are at least bordering the incredible. To me that’s one of the trademarks of the genre, and it’s one of the most fun ingredients of those films.
Of course the over-the-top incredibility is part of why we love these films, so I don´t really have a problem with this. I just felt like adressing this part of the film. I definetly agree about the locations being used in a great way.
Just rewatched this one… very pleasantly surprised, it is infinitely better than i remember it being.
I find that as my taste in film matures, I give more importance to a film’s execution over its concept. I believe the things that make films special are in their intricacies and details rather than the concept. This is why I’m so critical of certain films that have cool concepts but stumble in execution at times (eg. GBU, DRAH, The Mercenary). This film, while having a concept that’s nothing special, is executed masterfully. It is well-paced, well-directed, well-cast, with cool action. It’s a simple, seemingly unremarkable concept that’s remarkably well executed. Maybe it’s not the best example of this (Fistful of Dollars, Return of Ringo, and 10,000 Dollars for a Massacre are better), but it is far from a bad example. A solid 7/10 in terms of quality and 8/10 in terms of enjoyability.
I wish this film had a standalone english bluray release, only way to get it atm is buying an entire boxset (Vengeance Trails) just for 1 film as I don’t care about the rest.
Eh i just prefer it in a language i can actually read and understand lol… and the rest of my collection is in english too. God Forgives I Don’t being a slight exception since the only bluray with english audio is scandinavian, but it’s still in english outside of the description on the back.
yeah but the cover is entirely in german, doesn’t give me the same satisfaction of buying/owning it… might as well just pirate it at that point. Thanks for the insight, but being a german case/cover is a deal breaker for me… it’s not a must have anyway… only arrow boxset i have interest in is blood money as it has 2 very good films at least. Massacre time is “just” good and everything else on that box set is unremarkable imo (yes - even “…and god said to cain”)
Glad I don’t worry too much about that. I’m a big fan of 1950s American westerns and if it wasn’t for Spanish DVD releases, I wouldn’t have been able to track down many I’ve wanted.
