I had started to watch THAT FIERY GIRL with Cheng Pei pei, but got sidetracked with work, buying a house and several other things all at once. Been working on my site the last couple of days to try and catch up on that. It’s been real busy for me here lately. I imagine it has for you, too, as I’ve not heard anything out of you for a time now, lol.
I did manage to get some kung fu flicks from dddhouse recently. ANGRY RIVER, Angela Mao’s first movie, THE HIMILAYAN (which I hear is damn good) and BEACH OF THE WAR GODS with Wang Yu. It’s not kung fu, but I watched DEVIL FETUS recently. It’s a Lo Wei golden Harvest horror similar to what the Shaw’s were doing around the same time.
Yea I’ve been super busy lately too - was on vacation for 2 weeks and the wedding is rapidly approaching. I hear ya.
I need a vacation myself.
BTW, Media Blasters licensed ten more Shaw movies. Here’s the list that appeared on another board…

Cool Lion Vs. Lion and Chinatown Kid - probably will pick up those two - what version of CK is it?
Supposedly it will be the international cut. You missed out on the HK LION VS. LION disc?
For those interested, there’s English dubs for all these although I don’t know about LADY IS THE BOSS. I would say one was done for the film, but whether it is still in good shape is another question entirely. And if Media Blasters acquires the dubs for all these is up in the air at the moment. IRON BODYGUARD would be interesting to see dubbed as it was an extremely rare film to begin with. I’m one of a few people who really enjoy this one. A top film. If I hadn’t been trying to be fancy with only having 13 ‘Best Chang Cheh movies’, it would have been on there. I’m thinking of doing an addendum with at least five additional ‘Best of Chang’ since there were a few more that I felt should have been on there, but left off to keep a balance with his entire career.
I will try to track down the HK version of LvL as I am a big fan of Lo Meng.
Yeah, me, too. It was a lifelong dream come true to have finally met the man in person and speak to him briefly. FIVE VENOMS is out now from Dragon Dynasty, too. LION VS. LION has some amazing fights. You have seen it, yes?

He fights a lot in the film. It’s just him and Wong Yu. Wong Yu doesn’t fight at all. He plays a swindler. He does more evasive tactics than anything else. Wang Lung Wei is a bad ass in this, too. Hsu Hsia was a director and choreographer you never hear much about from fans, but his fight direction is very fast, powerful and spectacular.
Are those English dubs for those titles out already or coming out? I know there is no good English dub version out there? The one circulating out there is a VHS quality. Dragon Dynasty stuff is great. 5DV’s looks awesome. Haven’t seen LVL in a while. I don’t remember it too fondly. I always compare it to Instructors Of Death (which is great, one of the most creative fight sequences ever)
There were 50 Shaw films that played recently on the Kung Fu Channel and all but around 5 were English dubbed and sounded crystal clear. The channel is no longer around (ditto for MonstersHD) because of some kind of licensing dispute between Voom and Dish Network.
Thanks to a brother forumite I am trying out some Shaw Brothers films for the first time. This morning I started with Fist of the White Lotus which was a blast.
Chia Hui Liu getting in touch with his feminine side and defeating the white eyebrowed one with the help of some nifty needlework. This was good fun and I’m looking forward to trying out some more Shaw Brothers.

Breathtakingly beautiful (the director knows his Kurosawa!), but strangely uninvolving epic, starring Donnie yen and Kelly Chen
Some excellent battle scenes, incredible costume design (armour design in this case, watch the pic), but too much time is lost with a schmaltzy romantic subplot. Chen is a cuty and a beauty, which helps, but schmaltz is schmaltz is schmaltz. Still worth a look, but the kind of material Chang Cheh would’ve turned into a far more engaging movie.
Those two channels went under - they are out of business. Sucks as MonsterHD was pretty kick ass.

This was the sequel to EXECUTIONERS FROM SHAOLIN (1976). Liu Chia Hui aka Gordon Liu, played a minor character during the opening of that film. Liu Chia Liang directed and did the choreography. For CLAN OF THE WHITE LOTUS, Liu did the choreography only, but some Southern Screen mags I have from the time shows Liu working with director and fellow actor, Lo Lieh who plays the white haired villain in both films. Lo played a white haired bad guy in several other movies.
And it was nice to see Liu take up that white mane as Pai Mei in Kill Bill.

One of my favorites. Pai Mei is bad ass (although I could have done without seeing his naked ass fly out of the pool). I wonder if Lo Lieh was alive would QT chose him to revive that character in Kill Bill? I liked it slightly better than Executioners From Shaolin. Favorite scene is where Pai Mei hits those guys & then counts down to their death.

Lo Lieh doesn’t play Pai Mei in this movie. He plays the unnamed White Lotus Chief who was the much stronger classmate of Pai, or Bai Mei (also seen as Pak Mei). I don’t even think they reveal his name in the Chinese version, either, outside of referring to him as the White Lotus Chief.
I always make that mistake. He’ll always be Pai Mei to me. But of course you are correct.
