I actually like the English dubs. That’s the way I remember them as a kid. I know they are silly sometimes, but it’s part of the charm. I’m watching One Armed Swordsman right now (another Dragon Dynasy release, their stuff is awesome)
I absolutely HATE the dubs. I grew up with them, too seeing many of these movies at the drive in and later on television. But upon finally seeing them in CHinese, it was like a breath of fresh air. I saw them in a completely different light. Much better appreciate them in their original language. The experience is so different from watching those horrible dubs. However, there are a select few I can watch either way and it doesn’t bother me. FIVE ELEMENT NINJAS and HEROIC ONES are at least two I can think of.

I agree with Angel Face on the whole dubs vs. subs. I have seen quite a few of the dubbed versions (Invincible Pole Fight, Ten Tigers of Kwang Tung, Five Deadly Venoms, and Kid With the Golden Arm to name a few) and while some of the lines from the dubbed version may be very memorable the subbed version (and widescreen not pan and scan) is the way to go for me.

Did you happen to see that long lost dub for HOUSE OF TRAPS??? OMG, what were they thinking there? That is one of the absolute worst ever.

It’s a venom flick. The movie itself is no great shakes. It’s a decent time waster and the house of traps itself is pretty well constructed for what was obviously a minuscule budget. Some very creative death scenes in this one, but the booby trapped temple seen in MASKED AVENGERS was a bit more elaborate.
I’ve recently seen quite a few…Heroes of the East is definitely my favorite so far… then Master Killer and Flying Guillotine second and third respectively…Checking out Ten Tigers of Kwang-Tung next…
That’s a terrible movie, IMO. Even seeing it uncut makes little difference. No fault of the director though as the film had several problems that shut down the production for a couple of years which resulted in a lot of footage being scrapped and reshoots taking place as well as the entire story structure being redone. Some wild gore, though.
Well its bout time to see a terrible Shaw film anyway…so far the watching has been pretty well…

. When I watched my last dubbed film it was really bad out of sync about a 3 second delay with the audio and video. For some reason I decided to clean my dvd player heads and delay went away.

Don’t watch it for story that’s for sure. It’s like 2 movies running simultaneously. Makes sense now that I know the story behind the production, Take it with a grain of salt, story wise & you;ll enjoy it as I did. Great cast.
The story isn’t that hard to follow, it’s just done awkwardly with the flashback within flashback motif. The original ending had the Ten Tigers in the final fight. Fu Sheng fighting with a spear, Sun Chien taking out a bridge filled with attacking Manchu soldiers and Lo Mang taking on a gang of men armed with shields among other things. There are color stills of some of these that would appear celestial restored these scenes as well. Some of them are in some of the old Southern Screen magazines I have. Since some of the actors had left the studio when the film was shut down (Fu Sheng was seriously injured on the set of another movie; they would shoot multiple films at once), much of what had been shot couldn’t be used anymore. By the time the picture resumed, Cheh’s venom crew were his stable of choice despite them not being all that over in Hong Kong.
The flashback is way to long & I needed a few viewings to grasp what was what.
One of the problems is the dubbed version. The voices give the impression that the flashback is going on in real time. Several of these movies are confused by their dubbed versions. The scripts are sometimes mangled and names, or titles of individuals are screwed up by the dubbers not to mention the voice “actor” sometimes forgetting who he is voicing. The dubbers would do multiple voices and it shows from time to time.

In FIVE VENOMS dubbed version for instance, at the end, the Centipede is referred to as the number five of the group when he is actually the number one. Five was the Toad. In MASKED AVENGERS, the dubbed version is confusing in reference to the number of leaders to the blood drinking gang of killers. It’s stated at the beginning that their are three, but at certain points the dub refers to a single leader. In TWO CHAMPIONS OF SHAOLIN, the dubber for Chiang Sheng uses the wrong voice in at least one scene. There are other examples, but I guess considering they dubbed these in three days, mistakes were gonna happen.
