Kung Fu-films
Forgot I already made one. Might need an update though.

 1. 8 Diagram Pole Fighter
 2. Fist Of The White Lotus
 3. 5 deadly Venoms
 4. Crippled Avengers (not to be confused w/crippled masters w/ real handicapped fighters… creepy!)
 5. Avenging Eagle
 6. Executioners from Shaolin
 7. Killer Army
 8. Masked Avengers
 9. Master Killer
 10. Return To The 36th Chamber
 11. Shaolin Challenges Ninja
 12. 10 Tigers Of Kwang Tung
 13. 2 Champions Of Shaolin

 18. Kid With The Golden Arm
 19. Legendary Weapons Of Kung Fu
 20. 3 Evil Masters
A lot of reallly good movies on there, I…, but if I were doing one of these, it would a rotating list. Too many great Shaw movies for me to do 10 or even 20, lol. It would constantly change. Some would probably be constants from your list, though like AVENGING EAGLE and 8 DIAGRAM POLE FIGHTER.

yea great lists guys here’s my top 20 of Shaw Brothers

 1. Crippled Avengers
 2. Shaolin Temple
 3. 8 Diagram Pole Fighter
 4. Clans of Intrigue
 5. 36th Chamber of Shaolin
 6. 5 Deadly Venoms
 7. 5 Element Ninjas
 8. Kid With the Golden Arm
 9. Heroes of the East
 10. Mad Monkey Kung Fu
 11. Flag of Iron
 12. One Armed Swordsman

 16. Ten Tigers of Kwang Tung
 17. The Rebel Intruders
 18. Invincible Shaolin
 19. Legend of the Bat
 20. Daredevils

@ Angel Face

Thank’s for the lists
I’m going to use them to expand my knowledge of Chang Cheh
Saw already several of them : The boxer from Shantung (excellent), The heroic ones (not really a favourite of mine), The one-armed boxer (preferred the New One-armed fella)

I think I’ll go for Blood Brothers + Vengeance first; I think an ambitious film like Blood Brothers is something I’ll fancy (was this movie recently remade as The Warlords?) and Vengeance, well, a fan of SWs must dig a good bloody Vengeance, I’d say

ONE ARMED BOXER or ONE ARMED SWORDSMAN? ONE ARMED BOXER isn’t a Cheh film and it’s a kung fu picture whereas the other is a swordplay movie. Jimmy Wang Yu made a career out of playing one armed characters. ;D

Yes, WARLORDS is a remake of the earlier Cheh film, but the story was shot a couple years earlier by Pao Hsiueh Li at Shaw’s starring Lo Lieh under the title, OATH OF DEATH. It was more of an action film, though and jam packed with gruesome violence and sex. The final 30 minutes must be seen to be believed.

SWORDSman of course, slip of the typing fingers (2, Im the Two Fingerend Typeman)
I’ve seen that One-Armed Boxer too, a rather ridiculous movie, especially the finale, with Jimmy Wang Yu (not my favourite actor by the way) jumping around on one finger!

Yes I know, lol. Fans love that about these films. I don’t mind it so much, but that’s taking things to the extreme. The flying around, huge leaps and superpowers is commonplace in the Wuxia novels and film adaptations. The Shaw’s incorporated these in their swordplay movies but not too outlandish at least not in Cheh’s swordplay pictures. Some later films from directors like Lu Chin Ku and Hua Shan were pure fantasy and embraced the wilder side of extreme. The kung fu films (like ONE ARMED BOXER) incorporated the Wuxia fantasy elements as well resulting in zaniness on screen. If you thought the finger hopping was funny, Wang Yu tops that one in his MASTER OF THE FLYING GUILLOTINE which sees him walking on the ceiling! I wonder if that’s where Lionel Ritchie got the idea from?

I have been more of a fan of realistic kung fu than the fantasy based wuxia films (they use too many wires and are less talent driven imo).

If you want to see someone who practices real kung fu Sherp check out most of what Gordon Liu has done. If I had to pick my favorite solo martial artist it has to be Gordon.

Some real martial artists in Shaw movies that come to mind are–

CHEN KUAN TAI
LIU CHIA LIANG
LIU CHIA YUNG
GORDON LIU
TANG CHIA (mostly behind the scenes but usually plays a small part in his own, and others movies)
TI LUNG
CHI KUAN CHUN
LO MANG
SUN CHIEN
WANG LUNG WEI
LU CHIN KU (Like Tang Chia, mostly directed and did choreo, but frequently played villains in films of his own and others. Check him out as the ninja assassin in his own LADY ASSASSIN)

Others were opera trained learning all manner of styles and acrobatics or learned on set by choreographers

Also, Triad boss, Chen Hui Min was a real bad ass both on and off screen. He’s the lead heavy in FIVE ELEMENT NINJAS, THE MASTER STRIKES BACK and he plays the ninja villain in MY REBELLIOUS SON starring Fu Sheng. He’s also a bad guy that turns good in SHAOLIN HANDLOCK. He’s also in the opening attack sequence in ALL MEN ARE BROTHERS.

@ Angel Face. My list is (& I should have stated this) mostly based on the non fantasy Kung Fu from what I consider the Golden Era of Martial Arts films. The earlier & later films are not my favorite vibe. Having a Shaw top list is like having a top Hollywood movie. Too many movies spanning different genres (Horror, crime, love, fantasy) for me to claim expertise. I do not like Wuxia flick either. Although some Shaw movies are beautiful to watch just for the sets, costumes & scenery.

@ Sherp. No love for my list :’(

It’s funny how Angel Face turns up as soon as we start talking Kung Fu. I’m going to type the phrase Kung Fu on a random thread to see if you turn up
Your collection is stunning. I hope one day you can actually have space to display those posters & such. I bow in your general direction.

Sorry, forgot to tell you: LOVE YOUR LIST :-* :-* :-*

I watched one of Jiimmy Wang Yu’s One Armed (Insert Name) movies last night. It was One Armed Boxer - It had been ages since I last watched it and it’s just wall to wall fights not much in plot but sometimes you just need a lot of senseless brutality and vengeance.

Much more commercially successful than the lesser know Wang Yu classic, The One Armed Accountant

It would seem the more I read about Wang Yu the more it is apparent he was very much like his movie persona. The modern day kung fu flick, KNIGHT ERRANT is right on the money. The lady that played KUNG FU MAMA is in this one too. She gets run over (literally run over) by cars and keeps on tickin’. And the car backs up and runs her over multiple times, too.

Wang Yu liked to fight and beat people up. He had a seriously bad temper. Shaws sued him which accounts for the bad blood he had with the studio. He has a major following, though.
