Jess Franco

Finished my review of his Justine

I see that 88 has released The Bloody Judge and The Devil Hunter. I have never seen a Franco film and is interested to find out about his madness… Is any of those a good start?

I don’t think there is such thing as a ‘a good start’ when it comes to Franco films

But I think his 1970 version of Count Dracula starring Chistopher Lee is a decent place to start.

Any film he made with Soledad Miranda. Even if the movie isn’t good, you will be mesmerized by her screen presence.

Once you have watched some of his later films, go back and watch his Eurowestern El Llanero. You won’t be able to believe it is the same director.

No … Jess Franco’s cult status is to me an ‘Emperor’s new clothes’ scenario … you can watch in disbelief at how he got away with such low grade moviemaking for so long, it’s as though he’s deliberately making the scenes as shit as possible, and the worse the better, … as in, ‘How far can I push this?’

The sex scenes are just boring and/or borderline repulsive.

… but who know’s, you might find him fascinating. I think it’s just bad work that’s been hyped to hell.

Yep. Starting with some of his horror work like those is a good place. You’ll either want more or never again after going through those  Severin Films has released a lot of his movies if you get bitten. Good luck and good ride!
