Jess Franco

I picked up one of those Hard Gore Horror DVDs from the pound shop. Jess Franco’s ‘Nightmares Come at Night’. I’m not a massive horror fan but thought for as pound it was worth a try. And besides, it’s got Soledad Miranda and Diana Lorys in it. How bad can it be?
Anyone seen this one before? What should I expect?

I have seen this label aswell, and noticed DEEP RIVER SAVAGES by Umberto Lenzi (which stated on the cover 2.35), but just could not help think it would be cut ?

But perhaps for this price I should just purchase !

I just got Franco’s Doriana Grey but it seems to be mainly badly made hc-porn. Is it worth wathcing? I have loads of other unwatched films so I could just skip it.

Doriana Grey is only good if you’re REALLY into Franco. If you’re as big a fan as I am, then this film is great. It’s a moody, weird, sexy film that contains one of Lina Romay’s best performances. If you’re not a big Franco fan, I wouldn’t recommend it…

It’s pretty interesting. It’s got this dream-like, eerie quality about it. Plus, up until a few years ago, it was one of Soledad’s (and Franco’s) rarest films. And, yes, she is great in it…

Dunno if I’m really that big Franco fan but I have liked most of his films so far.

Have you seen Virgin Among the Living Dead yet? I’m curious about what you think of it.

Then give it a shot. To be sure, there is badly-done hardcore porn scenes in it but there more to it than that…

Yes, I’ve seen Virgin Among the Living Dead (in fact, I have several versions of it.) The problem with the film is that the entire focus of it changes depending on what version you see. The version with the “zombie dreams” in it feels more like a horror flick, with the zombie attack scenes and the odd, “shock” ending. The original version (Christina, princesse de l’érotisme) is more like “Nightmares Come at Night,” actually. It’s weird and dream-like with a strange undercurrent of guilt (because the main character’s father commited suicide.) I suppose I like the film but I haven’t seen it in years…

Yes, Virgin among the living dead was quite good. Fortunately the version I saw had the zombie-nonsense as an extra scenes in the end. The whole sequence looks so ridiculous and it’s too clear that it’s been shot years afterwards.

Yes. Luckily, that’s the version that’s available in most countries on DVD at the moment (the zombie stuff as an extra.) The rumor is still that the zombie footage was shot by Jean Rollin, not by Franco…

Gotta check it out again then. (got the same disc as you) I don’t remember any zombies.

By the way, what’s your opinion on Jack the Ripper? I like it a bit because I’m a Kinski fan but I’m also very interested in all the Ripper stuff. Some have criticized this film because it’s not historically correct but I think that’s the whole point of the film. In the end they got the Kinski but he’s not the Ripper he’s just another loonatic.

Haven’t seen it yet. But a Franco movie with Kinski in it, sounds like a must see. Interesting subject too, yes. I have an album by death metal band Benediction that has a song called Down on Whores, of which the lyrics are entirely made of quotes taken from the diary of the diary of James Maybrick. Some see it as evidence that Maybrick was Jack the Ripper. However, I’ve seen a Discovery documentary where this is disputed. What do you think?

Lyrics to Down on Whores:

‘What they have in store for them…
…do I desire…’
‘They will suffer just as I…
…revenge on the whore.’

Chorus:
‘Take the eyes, take the head
leave them all for dead.’

‘My hands are cold…
…my heart…is colder still’
‘I will take the bitch tonight…
The children are well.’

Chorus

‘The gentle man…the whore is in debt…
They are blind as they say’
‘Turn round three times
and catch whom you may.’

‘May comes and goes in the dark of the night.
He kisses and whores and gives them a fright.
…and the doctors will get all the blame
but it’s only may playing his dirty game.’
’…ha ha…’

‘Rip the bitch wide…
…left my mark…
…had a go at her eyes.’
‘The pain that night…
…burnt into my mind.
…recall…to stop my cries.’
’…ha ha…’

‘…when I cut her…
kissed…for a while.
…shall I write and tell them…
…peace of mind.’

‘Left her for dead…
there was thrill.
All whores…feel the…shining knife
Sir Jim with the shining knife.’
‘I give my name that all know of me.
so history do tell…
…a gentle man born…’

Chorus

I’ve read Maybrick Diary, clearly a hoax but entertaining reading nevertheless. It has just too many errors on tiny details but also some biggers which makes unbelievable.

Got to get that song. I remember hearing Benediction years ago, good group.

Okay, to catch up here:
Kinski makes “Jack the Ripper” fantastic. He’s just amazing in the flick. Kinski was in several of Franco’s films, especially in the 60s (Justine, Venus in Furs, etc.) Usually, he played smaller roles, which is why “Jack the Ripper” is awesome, Franco just lets him UNLEASH. I don’t care one bit about historical accuracy: a good movie is a good movie.
As far as Maybrick as the Ripper is concerned, I think it’s probably a hoax, too, but it’s a great read. I’ve got quite a few Ripper books, come to think of it…

Great song. Nice slow buildup to it.
Video to the song here:

Finally got around to watching Nightmares Come at Night and, to be honest, it wasn’t really my cup of tea. Apart from anything else it can’t be considered a horror movie by anyone’s standards. It just seemed to be a series of lesbian snogs strung together with a pretty lame voiceover. The ladies involved were beautiful of course but, on the whole, I would have to say it was only barely worth the £1 I paid for it and I don’t think I’ll be rushing out to see more Franco flicks for a while.

Franco’s certainly not for everyone. No big deal. I guess I’m one of those people who is really, really interested in lesbian snogs strung together by lame voiceovers…

I’d like to point everybody’s attention to
