James Bond

Nice reply.
Basterds and No Country rock!! Brad Pitt revived his career with that one, well for me anyway.
QoS plot was a major problem for me it was incoherent, the sub-plot of saving the Bolivian water supply was a bit weak. The fight scenes reminded me too much of the Bourne films.

But Visually I have to say QoS from what I remember is pretty unique because I remember it!! So director Marc Forster has too be given a lot of credit for that.

I have to admit Gemma Arterton and Olga Kurylenko stole the show.

Yeah, the photography is indeed superb.

Of course the Bourne films had already done this rapid cutting thing, but QoS does that better, and is also overall much better for me than the Bourne films, which are good.

Despite being an action film with rather unrealistic action QoS is in many aspects a more realistic Bond as usual, and the less spectacular water plot fits with that very well.

What is incoherent in QoS?

Screen writers Purvis, Wade, and Haggis contributed to the script. Although Craig and Forster wrote some sections themselves during the screenwriter strike,[5] they received no writing credits in the final cut. Maybe that’s it.
I find the flow of the film a bit confusing. It has been a while since I last watched it. The pacing ifelt a bit erratic.

Quantum of solace 2 disc edition is on Sale at my local supermarket for approximately €3.5 so I might it pick it up and we could further the discussion.

What are your thoughts on SKYFALL? This is my personal favourite of Daniel Craig’s films. I think it is as emotionally charged as On Her Majesty’s Secret Service and it is funny. Craig got his first real shot at injecting himself into the role. Despite all the drama he is able to put charisma and wit into it that was forgotten in SPECTRE. :poop:

After Casino Royale, a less overblown bond than usual, and the rather complex QoS the 2 Mendes Bonds are comparatively disappointing. Still not bad, but especially Skyfall is an too empty film, a bluff film which tries to look clever. Both Mendes Bonds are indecisive in style and content. And funnily if you look a bit closer the plot is often surprisingly dumb, more than necessary for a film which wants to look intelligent. Of course that could be said of many Bonds, if one bothers to think about what he has seen (which I usually do not in Bond films), but a classic older Bond like Goldfinger, which does not pretend to have any intelligence, is more sovereign with his plot holes.

But actually the biggest sin of Skyfall was that it was often a bit boring, or like a friend of me said: the film stood in its own way

I have bought my copy of QoS so I will watch it back to back with Casino Royale.
I admit I still remember the Forster film’s photography, the look therefore it must have been more eye-catching.
I don’t feel Bond are ultra cerebral or should be. That is probably why I choose to watch the older ones. SKYFALL was meant to look intelligent? I would not have guessed that?:thinking:You’re onto something there, modern Bonds being dark and brooding tend to be a boring. Then again I feel the same way about the Dark Knight Trilogy.

I want to point out that I DON’T WANT TO HAVE ANY MORE JOEL SCHUMACHER BATMANS!!

I remember really liking The Dark Knight but when I went to see The Dark Knight Rises at the cinema, I had to hold my laughter since the whole thing felt like a parody.

Erm the main thing The Dark Knight was Heath Ledger. HE made the movie. I never accepted Bale as Batman. The voice, god he sounds like he has laryngitis!! Sorry but he just wasn’t threatening. It was like Bruce’s little brother Billy found the Batcave and was playing at being Batman.
The Dark Knight Rises I agree, even the Adam West show was more believable. Rises was so over the top!! I will never understand why the regard is so high.

Dark Knight Rises is terrible. I was having a hard time suffering it through. So overlong, boring and stupid. These Nolan films are trying to be so serious but Batman works best with a pinch of humor, they’re after all about guys wearing costumes and using silly cadgets.

Not a fan of Nolan’s films in general. I remember being forced to sit through a screening of Inception. Horrendous!

I agree with everything you said. I found the attempt at realism and being serious completely incredulous. Especially the filming in Chicago. IT IS CHICAGO!! Nearly anyone would recognise it!
I always advocate Burton. I don’t like all his films but his Batflicks are the best ones. They exist in their own world. I bought into it. They also had the best Batmobile!

I walked out of Inception I don’t know what happened in the end. I don’t remember what I watch. That says volumes to me.
I struggle with a lot of modern movies. Deep, dark, brooding rings hollow to me.

Just found this ‘Bond’ documentary on ‘Youtube’, which - as 007 docs go - is very entertaining, and contains loads of behind-the scenes footage that I’ve never seen before.
Definitely worth watching, and it makes a refreshing change from the usual ‘lazy’ 007 compilation clips progs…

Oh I’ve seen this. It is good! Especially when Sean Connery is participating. I think it pretty much gives all the Bonds their dues, even George Lazenby. Which is refreshing.

The best Bond documentary I have ever seen is the 1999 THE JAMES BOND STORY. I bought it on German dvd recently.

UK members might be interested to know that Poundland are selling Bond BDs for just £2:00
So far I’ve picked up ‘You Only Live Twice’ and ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’

They didn’t have many, and you have to wade through all the usual box office flops to find the gold.

Good hunting!
