I like the Bond films generally, even if most of them are directed rather conventional but You Only live Twice (3/10) belongs to the few boring ones. And ha ha, yes, that it was supposedly written by Roald Dahl is hard to believe, but maybe the credits do not tell us the whole truth. Actually it all feels as it was written and directed by guys who were mostly half asleep.

Funnily director Gilbert made in the late 70s 2 more Bonds, which are both often pretty similar to this one, but while The Spy Who Loved Me (8/10) is surprisingly stylish, and one of the best of the series, his next one Moonraker (2/10) is the worst of them all.

Poor Moonraker. The only Bonds I have some issues with are some Brosnan entries purely because they’re nowhere nearly as quirky as older ones and look somewhat bland in comparison. Both Moonraker and A View to a Kill are my guilty pleasures, so good, I can totally understand why some people may dislike some shittier Moore entries though.

‘Moonraker’ is a 1970s movie about middle aged men getting off with young sexy women … plus a bit of espionage - what’s not to love! ? :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Worst song and musical soundtrack for any Bond film up to that point … Sheena Freakin’ Easton’ trying to look seductive in the credit sequence and with those pukey lyrics  … then Bill Conti’s disco funk chase music …. yuk, :face_vomiting: = my least fav Roger 007 flick.

The song is bloody terrible, I’ll give you that. And who did Sheena Easton blow to get herself actually onto the opening credits? That’s never happened before or since, has it?

That disco funk chase music was excellent, though! :joy: A bit over-hysterical, maybe, but excellent! You’ve got to get funky once in awhile, Aldo!

The actual only thing which makes A View to a Kill a little bit better than Moonraker is the engaging performance by Walken. He’s such a good villain in this turkey, he really had deserved a better Bond.

Next to The Spy Who Loved Me the best Moore Bond is Live and Let Die.
For Your Eyes Only and Octopussy are also always fun to watch.

From the Brosnan Bonds I like Golden Eye, which is very well directed. The World Is not Enough is also good, but the bigger action scenes all suck, which is quite odd for the Bond series.
But Tomorow Never Dies is another one which is often boring, it is a “painting by numbers” Bond, and even if nothing in it is badly made, it is a somehow a totally generic film.

Poor J.Bond, now he’s getting slammed too by some bloke’s.

Never! LOL

I’d say Die Another Day is the worst Bond film. That CGI is just terrible. A few years ago, I watched all the Bond films in order (one film each day), and I have to say that Roger Moore is my least favourite Bond actor. In my opinion, he turned the franchise into a comedy, which I hate. Watching Timothy Dalton play a serious Bond again felt like a relief.

I agree. The invisible car was ridiculous. It felt like a Harry Potter film more than Bond. Dalton is my personal favourite Bond. The Living Daylights is one of the most underrated Bond films imo. I still really like Roger Moore though. I can’t think of Bond actor I didn’t like since they have all added something different to the character. It’s the quality of the writing that the Bond franchise has suffered from but the issue has never been with the actors. Brosnan made terrible Bond films but he was brilliant in the role.

I remember watching Moonraker fifteen or so years ago and turning it off for I couldn’t stand it. I never made it to the space battle. That was a real bottom of JB movies, but, honestly, I’m not sure now If I liked any of them to that extent I would consider myself a fan.

Many of them have not aged well … but for me, that’s a big part of the fun. ‘Moonraker’, is no less a movie than ‘Dr. No’ or any of the Connery films - they’re all ridiculous and tongue in cheek.

The thing to remember is that when they were released, they were state of the art, jaw droppingly fab action adventure flicks, that no other filmmaking team could get close to.

The pre-title sequence in ‘Moonraker’ was simply astounding to audiences in 1979 … does that mean we were all easily entertained, and a little bit slow witted ? Certainly not, and I don’t believe there has been a huge leap in IQ levels of cinema goers in the past 40 years.

I was 13 when I saw this film in the cinema, and it was wonderful - so now I can still appreciate it’s silliness, without getting all outraged that ‘my time was wasted here’, or, ‘how dare they make such misogynistic, xenophobic garbage’

It would be like me at 13 getting all streamed up about 1939’s Wizard of Oz, being childish and unbelievable.

Leave ‘Raker’ alone ! LOL

Agreed, he is spectacular in that one.

I agree, it is undoubtedly the best Brosnan entry and it’s pretty good, but then the rest of Brosnan Bonds just got downright bland or stale. The thing about Moore’s Bond is that there was a very salient comedic element to it, which made it charming in a very old-fashioned way, so even the cheesiest Moore Bonds were kind of entertaining to watch, they also felt like an extension of Moore’s TV Series The Saint for better or for worse. Brosnan Bonds were a lot more serious, but lost all that quirky charm earlier Bonds had and turned into another mediocre actioner franchise. As @Platypus says, Die Another Day is by far the worst Bond in my book. It’s both preposterously bloated, ridiculously erratic and suffers from atrocious CGI. Brosnan himself was a good Bond actor, but a lot of movies he starred in kind of sucked, especially Die Another Day.

Now, I’m intrigued for I can’t remember the scene.

I agree, no huge leap.

Heh, like that is the real problem for a sw fan, where a woman gets slapped every five minutes.

I like all Bonds except Daniel Craig. Somehow I don’t consider him to be Bond. :x I always thought Brosnan was awesome as Bond but after Golden Eye the movies got worse with each new entry. Any ideas who would make good new Bond?

I liked Moore’s Bond, even the not so good movies are always fun to watch because of his comedy talent. I like View to Kill, it had fun action scenes, The music, clothes and hairstyles are incredible 80s cheese. :stuck_out_tongue:

Bond 25 now has its official title:
