Eureka’s edition was almost perfect but they had to cut the horse falls.

The bane of all UK releases

Thanks Phil. I am a fanatic when it comes to extras.

This may sound silly but I continually vexed by that attitudes to horsefalls in films. They are cut out of feature films as ‘cruel’ but people will make compilation videos on YouTube etc for laughs. :face_with_raised_eyebrow: Harry Hill is guilty of that too.
When it comes to western movies I think the only animals that get hurt are the stunt men!

Well that’s not true. The horses were harmed by these ‘stunts’ using tripwires. Many broke legs and necks, so I am not actually condoning such actions. I just think that it’s senseless to cut up films from a time when we didn’t have the same regulations to protect animals. It happened, so cutting the scenes won’t change that fact, and it’s also very distracting for the viewer since these scenes were integral to the film itself (Ulzana’a Raid is a good example).

So PC cancel-culture has hit Spaghetti Westerns, huh? I can think of several things that would be “offensive” today.

They were still using trip wires in the 70s??? I knew that they were used in early film and was a barbarous practice but I thought it was stopped long before Fistful of Dynamite was made.

I think the Man is right when it comes to editing the old movies. I think they should be kept as intact as possible and not be interfered with to fit current political attitudes.

Indeed, tripwires were still being used. The film that helped to bring in new regulations to protect animals was Never Say Never Again. The filmmakers were responsible for the death of a horse, I think, which was forced off a cliff.

Shit I thought that was fake!
I communicated to a friend who is more knowledgeable on animal rights and told me some techniques used to ensure the horses safety:

Nowadays, horses are trained to fall safely. Almost all animal performances are under the close supervision of the Film and TV unit of the American Humane Association. Stunt horses can be trained to fall on command safely.
Each horse has its hoof in sponge rubber to soften kicks, and mouths are taped to prevent biting.
To make the scene look more action packed, it is filmed at a very slow speed then at regular speed looks fast and furious.
Other preparations include digging a hole to fill with soft loose dirt to cushion the horse.

Vic Armstrong and Wendy Leech did the fall.

I absolutely 100% agree. Films should not be edited or banned because of PC cancel culture.

General censorship might be the BBFC and MPAA’s department but I don’t like being told what I can watch and what I can’t watch because it is not PC.

I spent the first weeks of my quarantine watching the entire series of Love Thy Neighbour - hilarious but it sure pisses off the PC brigade!

A job well done then… :grinning:

Certainly not PC but very funny!! The PC brigade who want this stuff burning are more dangerous than the original content.

I haven’t done that yet, but inspired by the Johnny Yuma thread I have just ordered a DVD in line with my new, as of today, strategy to systematically search for new favorites by reading opinions about SWs in release date order starting with 1966 searching for more highrated films, preferable rating 7/10 or more.

Johnny Yuma is stated to have been released Aug 11 so with such a low frequency so far I will probably not find that many interesting SWs if I continue to the end of 1969. List of spaghetti Westerns - Wikipedia .

I liked Mark Damon in Requiescant but this will be a new experience.

Great poster art!! Typifies Spaghetti westerns for me.
I am a fan of Johnny Oro AKA Ringo and his Golden Pistol. I only know of the WB archive DVD. Do you know any other editions?
