I Just Bought … (Non-SW Shopping Diary)

It looks like my late uncle and your Pop-Pop were at the same places at the same time. There are many people I wish that I had asked more about the time they served. I do have my late father’s stories of being a navigator on a bomber and the tales from my wife’s late grandfather of serving as an MP guarding Eisenhower. The interesting thing about my wife’s grandfather was that the rest of the family told me afterward that he would never talk about what he saw over there with them (including the horrors left behind at a recently “liberated” concentration camp) no matter how often they asked. But one day, when he and I were alone at the house, he just suddenly opened up and talked non-stop for what had to be nearly an hour. He even took out some photos that he took over there. I still don’t know why he decided to tell me but I was really honored that he did. My only regret is that I didn’t have a tape recorder of some sort.

Wow, those are some amazing stories there buddy! My Pop-Pop’s brother in law was a Marine in the Pacific and he sent me a long letter of some of his time in the war, my favorite part being that when his CO got injured, he got the order to lead the unit up this hill. I still have it all, including a photo of him and two of his buddies posing in the conquered encampment. The enemy left their flag behind so they held it in the photo for proof they took the area.

Radiance just announced a terrific bunch of films for this month’s pre-order.

Will definitely be getting the 3 Italian ones and am mighty tempted by the Japanese too.

I want all of them really, but I bought that Brucesplotation boxset from Severing recently so I’ll wait for the cheaper standard editions for these

Got two cool different editions of the same movie, no shame double dipping time

Got this sweet German Digipack release of Bava’s POtV as part of a trade with one of my buds from the Netherlands, it’s got the 4K and two Blu Rays, but some kind of rights issue has forced a Region B Locked 4K disc

I had to pick up the Radiance release as it’s English subtitle friendly, and also includes the short story the film is based off of. Almost totally missed out getting it, but I got lucky.

I fancy this release myself. :+1: Never seen the movie, just looks like my kind of thing.

I have been after this Jimmy Stewart/Anthony Mann classic Western for a while now, so was pleased to pick it up for £5 the other day.

Also, more charity shop bargains on DVD. I am actually working at this particular shop now as a part-time volunteer, so I get a chance to sort through the hundreds that come in to the store…
Any I fancy, I get for a discount.

That’s a mixed old bag … from masterpieces to non masterpieces! Got my diplomatic hat on today.

RE: ‘Man from Laramie’ … I watched this for the first time a couple of years back, and was pleasantly surprised - It’s a tougher than usual US western for it’s era and quite compelling.

Nice find

Most of Anthony Mann’s westerns are a bit tougher than their contemporaries and worth watching, I’d say.

I also managed to grab some reduced western blu-rays.

Three blurays that I’m putting by until Christmas as ‘premieres’…

Finally!!! Something from Arrow worth purchasing.

I pre-ordered through one of my sources for a pretty good discount.

Continuing to add to and upgrade my Hammer collection.

The yard sales and thrift stores were a bit of a let down this week but I did get the first four for the bottom barrel price of four for a dollar at a yard sale. I was most excited about finding The Mack, which I last saw when I was about ten years old, and a bit of modern Hammer with Let Me In.

I found Vampire Ecstasy aka The Devil’s Plaything for $1.75 at a thrift store. This is a hard movie to find over here and I’ve always been intrigued by its cult legacy. I immediately sat down for a viewing and found it well worthy of its U.S. “X” rating. Is it scary? No. Is it violent? No. Is it a good film? No. Does it contain hordes of naked lesbians? Yes…yes, it does.

So, I am curious no more.

I came across this in a thrift store today and, though I had never heard of it, I am now extremely intrigued.

According to everything I have read, this is absolutely hilarious and was the birth of British satire…it has to be true as it says so right on the cover. I had always ignorantly believed that the legendary Monty Python was where it all began.

I am most familiar with Peter Cook and Dudley Moore but had no idea they were in this show together. So, have any fans of British humor seen this show and, if so, am I going to laugh my buttocks off or did I waste $2.00?

I can’t speak about the original show although I know it was very popular and wound up on Broadway too. But Pete and Dud were fantastic in their heyday and Alan Bennett went on to become probably our best playwright of the last 50 years so there was no shortage of talent there.

Over the last week or so:

Dune 2 was a full-price 4K, Aquaman 2 had a fiver off, The Exorcist and The Wicker Man were in HMV’s “2 for £30” 4K promo, and the three Blu-rays were £5.99 each.

The DVD was a Father’s Day gift from my 5yr-old daughter who, according to mrs.caress, was insistent on that present since I enjoy that show with her all the time (which is true).

Hopefully you enjoy the rest of them

I plan on getting that Arrow edition of Who Dares Wins myself one of these days. I became a Lewis Collins fan after I saw episodes of the Mystery Game Show Cluedo on YouTube where he played Col. Mustard in Season 3 and guest starred in Season 2 as Mrs. Peacock’s supposedly dead husband.

I kinda feel like producers didn’t know what to do with him after the successes of the film and the TV series The Professionals, and he sort of bitterly gave up acting by the early 2000’s. A highly underrated actor with that certain tensity that worked every time.
